Paint It Blue: Songs Of The Rolling Stones ReviewI dig the Stones as much as anyone (*Let It Bleed* is one of my favorite albums), but I think those of you who compared this album to the original Stones versions are missing the point. The caption on the cover says it clearly: "This Ain't No Tribute." What it is is something more complex, and much more interesting. It takes songs by the Stones--the crown princes of rock and roll--and gives them back to the tradition that inspired them in the first place. The Stones paid tribute to the blues through their songs, and they made something entirely new and beautiful out of the traditional blues. The artists in this compilation bring these songs back home to the blues tradition, and create something new and beautiful in the process. (You'll also hear the close kinship between blues and country, a kinship that is often overlooked in the artificial division between modern blues, country, and rock and roll.) It's an example of what's so wonderful about the musical process as a whole--the organic melding of traditions and innovations to create beauty in sonic form.
