Queen of the Minor Key ReviewBrilliant from start to finish. Traditionalists will feel like they've heard these sounds before, but that's no complaint. It's like a bowl of your favorite ice cream. It doesn't matter how many flavors the shop has, you know the one you love the best and you'll order it every time you stop in.While listening to Queen of the Minor Key, I feel like I'm listening to a classic Sun Records release from the 1950s with fuller arrangements and superb sound. As I've gotten older, I find myself gravitating toward guitar music that stands the test of time, and this is one of those recordings that will hold its own.
Every tune (including the opening and ending instrumentals) is a keeper. Queen of the Minor Key is country-rooted with lots of R&B and a dash of jazz. The musicianship and songwriting are masterful. They're a perfect foil for Eilen's voice. It burns like a torch: clear and sultry. It's a pleasure to hear her deliver a cool interpretation of love's blindness in "Bang Bang Bang" about meeting with Cupid at a gun show.
This may be the anti-pop record of the year. It's not disposable, trendy or fleeting. It isn't for everybody. Alas, it may be even too cool and clever for the country music audience. But it will find a happy niche among the those whose tastes are broad enough to appreciate its abundance of ironic, old school charms.
Queen of the Minor Key Overview2011 album from the Massachusetts-based singer/songwriter. On Queen of the Minor Key, Eilen Jewell and her ace band conjure up songs depicting broken bottles as protection, bad voodoo and Cupid using a sawed-off shotgun instead of a bow and arrow. The dark, often time's haunted tales on the album are fleshed out at points by surf guitar, pedal steel and upright bass, but always hold Jewell's smoldering voice and unforgettable lyrics center stage.
