Heartland Highway ReviewI've been a Sister Hazel fan for a lot of years now and I'll admit I'm slightly biased toward anything they release. Having said that, I felt their last CD, "Release" was by and large a disappointment. In fact, it made me reluctant to purchase the new disc. I didn't like the "mellower" sound they seemed to be moving toward. I also purchased advance copies for a number of my friends and to a one they all reported similar displeasure.
I'm pleased to report that "Heartland Highway" is a far superior production. The group is famous for toe-tapping singalong music and I've spent many a night joining the audience in singing along with every song. I'm hoping that along with the usual group of "Hazelnuts" that will read this review there will be some curious people who have heard a couple of their major hits and want to see if the group is still making quality music. Perhaps even a new fan or two will read this. To those in the latter two categories I can only tell you not to hesitate. "Heartland Highway" is one of the most solid collections of new music you will find and any of the individual cuts on the album could easily be nestled amongst their older catalog as high quality music.
This is the second album where Ken Block has opened up the writer's room to the other members of the band. The first time around some of the songs felt tentative and a little underdeveloped, but on "Heartland Highway" the guys sound more confident. The lyrics show that each member has something to say and the music is more fully thought out and richer as well. It's unusual for a band to hit a new creative peak a decade into a recording career but Sister Hazel is definitely a band ascending to something special. This new album serves to build the excitement of anticipation. As I write this, the album has only been available for one day, but I'm already eager to hear what will come next. It's not going to be easy to top "Heartland Highway," but something tells me that even greater musical heights are a bit further down the Heartland Highway.
Finally, let me explain my review header for new Hazel fans...
Another reviewer compared the band's music to that of the Eagles. Here is why; The very first time I saw the boys perform I was with my then 13-year-old daughter. The band's first monster hit, "All for You" was climbing the charts and she wanted to see them. I'm not the biggest fan of most newer music so my expectations were very low. To my surprise, I enjoyed the show as much as my daughter and we got to spend time with Ken Block and Drew Copeland after the show. (The band is very friendly and always willing to hang out and chat with fans) I commented on the medley of Eagles' songs the group performed as their encore and Drew explained that they had several "encore sets" and each night one of the band members picks which will be played. We just happened to be there when the Eagles won the draw. I again expressed my appreciation for their amazing harmonies and lyrical skills and at that point Ken interjected with the band's philosophy. He said that somewhere between Metallica and Britney Spears is where the real music lives. He promised my daughter and I that for as long as people were willing to listen, Sister Hazel would strive to prove the truth of that philosophy.
Somewhere between Metallica and Brittney Spears is where the music of The Eagles, The Police, and the Doobie Brothers lives on. If that's where your musical taste "lives" as well, you will also find that Sister Hazel has lived in that neighborhood for a long time. Head down "Heartland Highway" and visit for a while. You'll be glad you did.Heartland Highway Overview
