George Duke - Greatest Hits ReviewAlthough this collection is shallow in comparasin to keyboardist/composer/vocalist George Duke's extensive body of work, it is a representative sample of his journeys through the worlds of jazz, funk, R&B and pop during the late '70s and '80s.
Many tracks feature the contributions of legendary bassist Stanley Clarke, who headlined two albums with Duke during the 1980s. The results of their collaborations are excellent and funky to boot; check out their take on the funk classic "Mothership Connection."
Variety rules among the other tracks on this release, "Shine On" flirts with disco, "Starting Again" dabbles in 'quiet storm', and "Sweet Baby" is more pop than one expects from Duke (in fact, I heard it at Walgreens the other day).
The pair of tracks that really sell this release, though, are the funky, funky tracks "Dukey Stick" and "Reach For It." These sound a little dated by today's standards, but outside of Roy Ayers or The Blackbyrds, few late '70s acts could stay as funky in a jazz context as Duke. The are classics, right up there with the aforementioned artists work of the era and that of Parliment and Funkadelic.
If you're a fan of George Duke, contemporary jazz, '80s style R&B, or building up a funk classics library, you'll love this album.George Duke - Greatest Hits Overview
