Little Victories ReviewI fell in love with this album at first listen. "Little Victories" came over the air waves from a college station in New Paltz when I was in a particularly black mood, cramming for final exams my junior year of Vassar. Just hearing the song elevated my mood and changed my life in the same way that "Circle Game" did the first time I ever heard Joni Mitchell croon. Smith's spot-on lyrics ("Look at the angel/High above the sky/She must have burnt her wings now/Afraid to come down") and entrancing melodies showcase his virtuosic talent as both a singer and songwriter. However, the virtues of this album don't only extend to wistful tunes sung by a guy with an amazingly cool singing voice. (I've heard Smith described as reminiscent of Billy Joel, but with a Texas twang.) This is also a singer who is enlivened with Southern charm. On such numbers as "The Levee Song," Smith shows he knows how to swagger, but in a good way: "You say you don't love me, but I think you might/Meet me on the levee tonight." Based on Smith's extensive musical talent, he's got every reason to strut his stuff.Little Victories Overview
