Raoul and the Kings of Spain ReviewThis is far and away the best Tears for Fears album (really, by this point, a Roland Orzabal album), and moreover, it's one of the very best, and most overlooked, albums of the 1990's. While previous and subsequent TFF albums were always blessed with standout tracks (Songs from the Big Chair being the best of the rest), this one is flat-out brilliant. It plays like a concept album, with a satisfying shift of moods and styles, and there is not one weak track in the bunch. Orzabal's songwriting has never been stronger. It's a CD that demands to be listened to from beginning to end. There are still, of course, standout tracks: "God's Mistake", "Humdrum and Humble", and "Don't Drink the Water" (with a searing guitar line) are my personal favorites. Orzabal often seems to echo both Lennon and McCartney in both voice and songwriting skills, but that's not to say this music is derivative in any sense. It is just simply stunning, both vocally and instrumentally.Raoul and the Kings of Spain Overview

Cantina Classics ReviewAfter listening to Frank Corrales in person and enjoying his personable and light hearted stage presence, the first thing anyone would want to do is to preserve the moment in owning a recording of this spicy and melodically happy music. These are musical pieces that were heard in movie theatres and cantinas from the early 1900s to the 1950s, played in exactly the same fashion. I heard music on this album that was incorporated in the soundtrack of one of Clint Eastwood's spagetti westerns and the opening music to the Robert Rodriguez movie Desperado, all done on acoustic guitar. A charming rendition of Manuel Ponce's Estrellita finishes the album. This is truely a time machine to the music of the working class of Texas and Mexico during the first quarter of this century.Cantina Classics OverviewInstrumental guitar music from Mexico's "Golden Age Cinema" - when men loved their horses and women equally well and played guitars like "lost souls searching for salvation."This is the legendary CD by Frank Corrales that sparked the new interest in Mexican or Tex-Mex style guitar. It has put Frank's name at the top of the list of players like the late Antonio Bribesca.Frank's playing is lively and soulful on this collection of Mexican gems.

How Did You Find Me Here Review"How Did You Find Me Here" is like a wind-up clock that runs down before it gets to the end. But boy, those first six or seven songs are as strong a lineup you're gonna get from a singer-songwriter. Wilcox is rightly compared to James Taylor and John Gorka, but he could also be compared to the early Bruce Cockburn, another Christian songwriter that an atheist could listen to without taking offense. The title song sounds like an encounter with a lover, but it's really about God. "Eye of the Hurricane" is on my top ten list of great songs of all time. "Language of the Heart," though mightily sentimental, is heartfelt and touching because it gives a male point of view often reserved for women (Will you still love me tomorrow?). "Rusty Old American Dream" is one of the few fun songs on the CD, and uses a common Wilcox device of running an extended metaphor or "conceit" throughout the length of the tune. "Jamies Secret" uses the tune of the folk classic "Lord Maxwell" to grieve for a lost friend. "Saturday They'll All Be Back Again" is the best song about cruising in a small town you'll ever hear. Okay, that's enough - just thinking about these great songs makes me want to listen to them again. How Did You Find Me Here Overview

DVD-The Fingerpicking Blues Of Mississippi John Hurt ReviewThis is not a note-for-note transcription of John Hurt's songs. Rather, Sebastian and Traum try to convey the feel of Hurt's style as they have come to interpret it. Not to say that they've changed the songs much -- they will get you very close, and then the finer details can be picked up by listening to the records. Also it becomes quite easy to figure out songs not included in the DVD once you have gotten the hang of it.
It's worth mentioning that they do not teach you how to fingerpick, so it would be helpful to have a little experience with that style. (don't worry -- the only "fingerpicking" song I knew before the DVD was Paul McCartney's much simpler "Blackbird," and I was able to pick up the basics of John Hurt in a few weeks.) The songs are nonetheless difficult to master, especially if you plan on sometimes singing along with them, as everyone should.
Finally, the conversation between Traum and Sebastian and the interview with Sam Hood are warm and fascinating. 4 stars because they could have included more of John's songs and definitely could have discussed more about his life in Greenwich Village.DVD-The Fingerpicking Blues Of Mississippi John Hurt Overview

Para Alem da Saudade Review
Mellow enough to be wonderful as a background for a romantic dinner or for a curling up with a good book, and gorgeous enough to listen to without any distractions, Ana Moura's sultry voice, and the selection of melodic songs in this exquisite collection make for an exceptional CD that should find a wide audience, way beyond the niche of "world music" and lovers of the Portuguese fado. Born in 1980, Ana was discovered by producer/guitarist Jorge Fernando, who had been guitarist for the legendary Queen of Fado, Amalia Rodrigues, and Ana has a semblance of Amalia's vocal quality, with her smoky sound and emotional expression. She has performed to SRO audiences from Carnegie Hall to Amsterdam's Concertgebow, and perhaps this young international superstar will inherit Amalia's mantle as the new Queen of Fado.
Among my favorite tracks is "Vaga, No Azul Amplo Solta," where Ana is joined by Spanish singer/songwriter Patxi Andion, and their blend of voices in this beautiful song touches the heart and lifts the soul, and another is the lovely, lilting "Ate Ao Fim Do Fim." The musicianship throughout the CD is marvelous, with Jorge Fernando's guitar work predominant, and a slight jazz feel to the last track with a saxophone added to the arrangement (Fernando also wrote many of the songs and did the arrangements). The booklet insert has lyrics in Portuguese and English, and many photos of the very attractive Ana. Total running time is 47.03Para Alem da Saudade Overview

Reverie ReviewFirst (since I'm about to be critical) let me say that I still consider myself to be one of David Wilcox's greatest fans. I see him live every chance I get. His music has changed my life.
This album has some great tunes -- Dynamite in the Distance is haunting! -- but it makes me realize that over the years David Wilcox has mostly shifted to an audience that I'm not really part of. It's no one's fault - we've just drifted apart. I'm glad most of the reviewers love his new stuff. But it makes me miss the days when his inspiration was less. . . political. I'm definitely not saying he should do something different to keep pleasing me or that he shouldn't be able to sing about whatever moves him -- I'm just saying his recent topics don't move *me* like his earlier music. (This isn't to say I disagree with his politics, either - just that I don't enjoy the musical version.)
Hypocrisy -- religious and political -- seems to be a common theme here. There seem to be some chips on his shoulder that he just can't shake. Little Fish has a fun melody, but (even though I don't have a fish on my bumper), it strikes me as a self-righteous rant against the self-righteous.
What I loved most about his earlier music is barely audible to me now.
The recording itself is interesting. It's a "live" album with no audience noise. It works well for some songs, not for others. Still, pretty impressive how compelling he usually is with just his voice and guitar.
If you're already a DW fan, you'll probably find something to like here. If you're new to David Wilcox, download Dynamite in the Distance and then move on to How Did You Find Me Here for a real introduction to an amazing songwriter.Reverie Overview

State of Mind ReviewThe ONE TIME TiVo lets me down. It failed to record Letterman last night for some reason. Good thing my insomnia kicked in and I stayed up and watched it anyway. This guy was INCREDIBLE. I have a fascination with amazing acoustic guitar playing and this was AMAZING. I would most describe it to be like a flamenco style. Incredible guitar talent. And the vocal trumpet thing? Awesome. When he played that guitar solo along with his "trumpet" solo it took me a second to figure out what was going on it was so seamless.
I had no idea the guy was actually BLIND until I started looking up everything I could find on the guy that was on the internet. I can't remember the last time seeing a musician perform on TV has had such an effect on me. First thing this morning I got up and went all over town hoping someone would have his CD (of course... nobody did). I gave up on the search for a little while, but just could not stop thinking about it. I eventually tracked down a copy (although it took a longer than I wanted - Borders calls it "R&B"... which I guess it could be, but it seems unfair to classify his music into such a 'neat' category).
One of my favorite songs so far is the second track, "If You're Gonna Leave," but they're all really solid songs. I don't want to do a play-by-play of the entire CD, but just know that the CD is pretty incredible. If you liked what you have seen on Letterman/Leno/etc. or heard on NPR, you're going to love this CD.
----------------------
I just came back on after having this CD for about two months because I wanted to give an update of sorts after having listened to this CD quite a bit. Honestly, I just enjoy the CD more and more each time I listen to it. I talk up Raul Midon's music pretty much any opportunity that I get, and I really hope that he becomes very successful. We need more musicians like him in the world... it just makes the world a better place to live :)State of Mind OverviewManhattan Records is proud to release 'State of Mind' the debut album by Raul Midon, a singer, guitarist and songwriter of dizzying talent and infectious spirit. The album's thirteen tracks were all written or co-written by Raul Midon, with legendary producer Arif Mardin and his son Joe helming the sessions. Jason Mraz, a major Midon booster who took Raul on tour last year, co-writes and sings on the duet 'Keep on Hoping', and one of Raul Midon's idols Stevie Wonder plays harmonica on 'Expressions of Love'. 2005

Life Short Call Now ReviewI'm on my second listen as I write this. To be honest, I'm more moved to write because of some of the reviews here then from listening.
I discovered Bruce's music in the mid 70's. I own all 26 of Bruce's cd's + 2 of the best of packages, I think I qualify as a long time fan! Here's my Bruce bias: I strongly prefer his first albums from 1970 - 1984; in my opinion his last GREAT album was Inner City Front. My absolute favorites are Circles In The Stream, In The Falling Dark, Further Adventures, Inner City Front and Salt Sea & Time; but I really love all of his first 12 albums. I enjoy Dancing In the Dragon's Jaws; but to me the only milestone aspect of that album was that it was in a completely new style, not that it was better then what came before (it wasn't).
After Inner City Front, I still really connected with some of the songs from Trouble With Normal (the title track) & Stealing Fire (Rocket Launcher & Lovers In A Dangerous Time). The last song that deeply touched me was Child Of The Wind from Nothing But A Burning Light. 2 songs from this new cd seem equally special: Life's Short Call Now & Beautiful Creatures. Part of my disconnect was from Bruce's addition of World Music flavors, which for whatever reason doesn't tend to connect for me. I'm personally glad that he's largely abandoned the World Music/Latin flavor on this cd.
For me all the albums after Trouble With Normal are ok, but not up to his previous standards. With that said, my current feeling is that Life Short is at least as good as anything Bruce has done post 1984 & is a very nice artistic statement. To make a generalization, I've found most pop/rock/folk artists seem to make their strongest & most emotional statements when they're young; I think part of the aging process for many of us is less intense emotions, & as a former professional musician myself I believe that feeling is at least 1/2 the battle. This doesn't seem AS true to me in jazz & classical music as it does in pop/rock. (That is NOT meant as a criticism of either form.)
At the moment I'm really enjoying the title track, To The Universe, Beautiful Creatures & the instrumentals (which remind me a lot of In The Falling Dark). In fact referencing the reviewers who complained about the instrumentals, Bruce has had several on most of his albums. He's one of the best acoustic guitarists on the planet & I always find these enjoyable.
One other comment to the person who complained that the cd wasn't "Christian" enough; Bruce has NEVER labeled himself as a Christian artist. Yes, he has made it very clear in both his music & in interviews that Christianity is his religion of choice & that he is a very spiritual person; but "Contemporary Christian" mainstream he is not & has never pretended to be. That comment irritated me more then any of the other reviews here. One of the things that I have always loved about Bruce's music is that it is deeply spiritual & loving WITHOUT preaching religious dogma.
To sum up, I think this is an enjoyable cd & as good as anything he's done since the mid 1980's; it also may grow on me (while writing this I'm now on my 3rd listen!). On the other hand, if you want to see why some of us are fanatical about BC, check out his earlier recordings. If your preferences lean more towards rock I suggest Further Adventures of, Inner City Front, Humans or possibly Dancing; if your preferences lean towards acoustic/folk I suggest any of his first 8 with the live Circles a very good place to start. The Mid 80's Canadian only 2 cd edition of Waiting For A Miracle is also a great starting point for people new to BC, & has a few exclusive tracks.
A few days after writing this, I saw Bruce live. A couple comments: while it didn't become apparent until seeing the show, Bruce seems to be currently experimenting with a musical version of 1920's expressionism on this & the previous You've Never Seen Everything. And believe me, the vocal on Beautiful Creatures is not a sign of losing his voice, but rather a very intentional & powerful effect. This cd makes a lot more sense after seeing the tour. I'm not going to do a full concert review, but the short version is the new material really worked, the arrangements on the older material (80's & 90's) tended to be weak, & he really needed a bass player (the touring band is a trio with a drummer & keyboard player Julie Wolfe).Life Short Call Now OverviewLife Short Call Nowfinds Cockburn's insightful observations on life, love, politics, and the environment as sharp as ever, and longtime fans and new fans alike are sure to be won over by this sterling album. The first single, 'Different When It Comes to You,' goes for adds at AAA June 5th.16 stations already reportingincluding R&R reporters KPIG and WNRN. MTV Unplugged No. 2.0 ReviewI LOVE this CD. Ms. Hill walks us through her spiritual journey. If you don't want to go, get off this train now. She won't mind 'cause as she reiterates time and time again she is doing her own thing. Ms. Hill feels no pressure from the industry and it shows. This cd is absolutely nothing like Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. This cd is, as she states on her cd,"a tub that stands on its own bottom."
She is a poet. Her track "Just Like Water" is awesome. The metaphorical references to water and relationships blew me away the first time I heard it. Not only does she work her magic with an acoustic guitar and her distinctive voice, she works your soul with her spiritual revelations. As a listner you are required to become reflective. Even if you do not like the music you WILL walk away with an understanding of self. And if not with an understanding, than surely with questions.
This CD is inspiring, revealing, honest, healing, thoughtful, insightful, gritty yet delightful. In case you don't know it yet, I am vibin' this in a Big way.MTV Unplugged No. 2.0 Overview

Easy Wonderful ReviewHow does one review this album? From beginning to finish, there is not one track that you're going to skip. Theres nothing horrible here. However, theres not one track that you're going to want to skip ahead to, either. This album doesn't have a "Satellite", "Fa Fa", "Happier" or "Careful" thats going to pull you in. It also doesn't have a "Ruby Falls" or a "Come Downstairs and Say Hello" as an epic ballad. This is an album full of twelve songs that pretty much don't TAKE ANY CHANCES. They are all mid tempo, three minute pop songs. They all sound very much alike, and it's a bit of a shame. Songs like these have always been on Guster albums, but for every "C'mon", there was always something like "Lightning Rod" that really caught your attention as something different. The guys played it safe this time, trying to sound like the band they thought they should be. That kicked Adam Gardner totally off vocal duties, totally killed the bongo percussion, and turned the songwriting into a strict formatted process. This album has no variation, and suffers from it. Guster has always been a "happy" band, but this album is just a bit too sugar coated for its own good.
Guster fans, I still would suggest looking into this album. It will not be your favorite album by the band, not by a longshot, but you will find 12 decent songs that will entertain you by a band that you like. To people who are not familiar with the band, DO NOT START HERE. Start with Lost and Gone Forever and Keep it Together.
I hate writing a review like this. Guster is the band that got me into music, and they finally slipped. 4 year gap between albums and not one standout track? It just doesn't make sense. Guster seems to have always been trying to find their "sound", and this is the album where they honed in on what they considered their best assets. Problem is, Guster's definitive sound turns out to be when they have no idea what they want to sound like. This is not a great album. This is not a horrible album. It's somewhere in between, to the point where it's hard to figure out what you think of it. That can't be a good thing.Easy Wonderful Overview

Beyond The Missouri Sky (Short Stories) ReviewPat Metheny and Charlie Haden are apparently close neighbours, well, that much is now obvious. These two masterful musicians have become one in a most wonderful way, so close that they're almost the same person.
The recording has an earthy, very "real" sound to it, Metheny is sitting over there, Haden just over there, and you're alone with them, listening to these two masters entertain you. It is an intimate record, to be listened to when you're feeling extremely comfortable for it to achieve its maximum effect.
The melodies and chord choices are superlative, generally I know where they're going to take the tune, but when they make different choices I realise why they're in the league that they are. The results can haunt me, lift me, leave me wondering just how they could have made that melodic line so perfect.
It is not at all provocative, it doesn't jarr the senses in any way. It soothes and relaxes as it passes by. If there has to be any criticism of the record it cannot be directed at the musicianship, which is of the highest order. A number of similar-sounding tracks can eventually coalesce in the memory, and that is a problem here, there are peaks of pleasure and plains of placidity, but they're subtle, and the musical landscape ends up looking rather like the sumptuous cover art.
The only recording niggle I might direct at the recording is that some of Pat's more percussive acoustic notes come awfully close to distorting the recording on a couple of tracks. Depending upon my mood these sometimes enhance that "two masters in your living room" effect, and at other times I'll feel that they're intrusive.
As soon as I bought this album and found such beauty I passed on a recommendation to a friend with similarly avant-garde tastes in other areas (I regularly listen to Bill Nelson, David Torn, Fripp, Russell Mills, Allan Holdsworth etc but appreciate Metheny's tremendous musicality nonetheless). My friend was immediately captured by the same spell. In the years we've known each other he's never used the word "beautiful" to describe any music he's ever talked about, except for "Missouri sky ...".Beyond The Missouri Sky (Short Stories) OverviewFull title - Beyond the Missouri Sky (Short Stories). The Age of Miracles Review"We've got two lives, one we're given, the other one we make," Mary Chapin Carpenter sang on Come On Come On, her 1992 breakthrough album. For her, that estimate was too conservative --- three years ago, a pulmonary embolism nearly killed her. Seasons of doctors followed, and medicine and rest. Now she's released The Age of Miracles, and it's not overstatement to suggest that it's a rebirth --- a third life for her.
Small complication: In each of her lives, there have been two Mary Chapin Carpenters, one a significant writer, one a singer who can deliver hits. Sometimes the brainiac Brown grad and the Nashville hit maker don't seem to meet. She writes from the intersection of emotion and reason; she can sing like she's fronting a bar band. It's those raucous, bawdy songs that get the most air play --- and will, forever. Mary Chapin Carpenter feels lucky. She'll take her chances. And you should see her at the Twist & Shout. Etc....

I'm fond of that Mary Chapin Carpenter, but I value the writer more. And as a writer, she's anything but Nashville. Carpenter is a master of the line that slips under the radar and pierces your heart, the thought you believed only you had, the painful truth that loses some of its pain for being shared. We have a mutual friend in Don Schlitz, who wrote "The Gambler" and a sheaf of other songs that will be played as long as there is music. Though they collaborated fifteen years ago, the memory is still sweet. "To think, I had the opportunity to sit across the table and make up a few songs with her," he says. "You can only imagine what a lifetime experience that was."

It may take a professional to appreciate just how special Mary Chapin Carpenter is: The singer-songwriters who can combine actual poetry in a framework that's not entirely foreign to Nashville make for a very short list. No wonder that town's most accomplished musicians line up to record with her --- especially now, when her always personal writing and singing have new dimensions. And then there's her fresh resolve. As she sings in "The Way I Feel," the last song on the CD, "When I'm out alone on the midnight highway/ There's nothing like both hands on the wheel/ Radio playing `I Won't Back Down'/ Baby, that's about the way I feel."

Those lines, twangy guitars and that unmistakable voice were echoing in my ears when the phone rang. And off we went....

Jesse Kornbluth: Three years as a patient --- that isn't an experience you slough off. How bad was it? And how are you now?

Mary Chapin Carpenter: Much better, thanks. It was a stunning turn of events, a hard time in every way. When everything you've ever thought about yourself is torpedoed...it's rough. A lot of the new music springs from that. To record those songs and now to tour, that feels celebratory.

JK: Let's clarify. By calling your CD "The Age of Miracles", is that a statement of faith: Mary Chapin Carpenter believes in miracles?

MCC: I didn't mean it in the religious sense, I'm allergic to that language. I could be predictable and say I thought it was a miracle that America elected Barack Obama; there were times during the inauguration that my heart was pounding. In the context of the song lyric, I'm saying that if you're lucky enough to believe that miracles exist, then they come --- because you make your own luck, your own beauty, your own joy. You can try to pull it from other sources, see it in the world, but really, it starts with you.

JK: I can see another reason for thinking that making your own joy is necessary. As I scan the songs on this CD, they're hardly the sound track for "Pollyanna." There are references to Buddhist monks in Burma, racial tension in Louisiana, Ernest Hemingway's wife, the Apollo moon landing --- this is smart music for smart, informed people, made by, forgive me, a serious person. Are you hooked by what's going on?

MCC: If you pay too much attention to the news, your heart would be broken in a thousand pieces every day. You couldn't function. So you have to balance....

JK: Let's talk about the transformation of news into art. The monks in Burma....

MCC: Watching their non-violent protest, barefoot in the rain, simply so the world could bear witness --- every day it went on, I was holding my breath. I couldn't believe so much courage. And I thought: if you connect to it, you can draw something of that courage into your own life.

JK: Mrs. Hemingway --- which one?

MCC: The first one, Hadley Richardson. I was reading a new edition of "A Movable Feast," and I thought about Hadley --- of Hemingway's wives, we know so little about her. Many people only recall that she lost the manuscript of his novel, but I knew there must be much more. So I found two out-of-print biographies and started writing the song....

JK: To someone who's listened to you consistently through the years, two things about "The Age of Miracles" come through strongly. One, that this is right up there with your best work. And two, which, given the music business, is somewhat in opposition to the first: I see no songs here --- except the last --- that shout: I am an obvious candidate for a hit. This is adult music, melodic and tasty, but also thoughtful and sometimes challenging.

MCC: Looking back twenty years, perhaps the greatest struggle throughout is the struggle to be authentic. In the '90s, when I was having great success and things were crazy as could be, there was pressure --- sometimes spoken, sometimes not --- not to do this or that. And I thought: who am I? The hardest time during those years was when I said "yes" to something that didn't feel authentic to me. But that is how you learn too. I had a wonderful career with Sony, but they needed to get records on the charts. Since I started recording for Rounder, that kind of pressure has disappeared.

JK: "Come On Come On" --- 7 hit singles, 4 million CDs sold. And that was just the start. When you think about how sizzling your career was in the early to mid-`90s, what comes up for you?

MCC: It's hard to describe. On the one hand, there was the fatigue, the people tugging at you, so many obligations --- and that doesn't even include getting up on stage. But then there was the travel around the world, the amazing people, audiences, extraordinary opportunities, your music being heard and connecting to people. It was an extraordinary experience. I feel blessed to have had two lives.

JK: You're getting the "Spirit of Americana" Free Speech in Music Award from the Newseum's First Amendment Center and the Americana Music Association. What for, exactly?

MCC: I've always thought of myself as someone who didn't edit herself, I've just tried to write about my heart and the world, I never saw myself as a formal advocate of free speech. So this award came out of the blue. I still wonder: Are they sure?

JK: This tour --- will you play the greater hits?

MCC: On acoustic dates, you can sometimes get some distance from them. but this summer, in the bigger places, with the full band, it's going to be great fun to crank it up at the end and fling them out thereThe Age of Miracles Overview

Guitar Lessons: Flamenco Made Easy Learn How to play Flamenco guitar instructional video ReviewCharles Sedlak is not what you'd call a pedantic music instructor. He's more like Arlo Guthrie showing you some licks in the back room after a set at the Berkeley Cafe. In this DVD Sedlak assumes you have the basics of the guitar figured out and just want to sound like a flamenco guitarist. He doesn't dwell on the musical tradition behind flamenco, spend time teaching you all the forms, or hold forth on the nuances of technique.
He just shows you how to get the flamenco sound, while informally teaching you some cool sounding but easy to play pieces. And sometimes that's all you want. Formal flamenco studies are slow going. Sedlak gets you to the payoff quickly, so you can sound like you halfway could actually BE a flamenco player, with just a few weeks of consistent practice.
There is much, much more to flamenco than Sedlak presents in this video course. But you're more likely to stay motivated with this material, especially if you're a begninning flamenco player, than if you take the long road of the flamenco purist. Even intermediate players will find some nifty secrets to add flair to their playing. And in contrast to the sometimes stupefying cadence of other flamenco teachers, Charles, with his long hair and wavy eyes, is wonderfully entertaining.

Hal Leonard Guitar Method DVD: For the Beginning Electric or Acoustic Guitarist (2000) ReviewI bought this in order to supplement the method books I am currently studying. Its much more informative than the "Dummies" dvd and you will learn more. My only complaint is when using it to do chapter searches(get to a specific point) it is very confusing. It also would be better with a supplemental book that contains the songs you learn. Still buy it you will be glad you did.I would also recommend Hal Leonards Method books as well. Enjoy!!!!Hal Leonard Guitar Method DVD: For the Beginning Electric or Acoustic Guitarist (2000) Overview

Song To A Seagull ReviewThis album has so often been deprecated by fans and critics of the great Mrs. Mitchell. Too verbose and sophomoric! Too gloomy! Poorly-recorded! Stuck in its era! Or, the damning-with-faint-praise, It held forth the promise of what was to come! Well, admitting a partiality to her early work (pre-"Don's Juan Reckless Daughter"), I would rate this as the third-best Joni album (out of 17 in her career) behind only Blue and Ladies of the Canyon. Yes, it's even better than the great Court and Spark, or even its most-comparable competitor, Clouds.
Musically, Song to a Seagull is grand in its simplicity - the vast majority of the songs feature Joni's fascinating guitar work as the stark support for her piercing, soaring soprano. While Joni's vocals are schooled and formal, they are nonetheless heartbreakingly beautiful, and the looseness afforded by the spare instrumentation (not to mention "producer" David Crosby's love of cavernous echo) gives this a stormy romanticism reminiscent of Tim Buckley's Happy Sad. As for the song selection, it would seem that in response either to what was popular at the time, or to Joni's personal outlook and mood as the album was assembled, she eschewed the many of her songs already made popular by other artists - "Both Sides Now," "Urge for Going," "Circle Game," "Chelsea Morning," "Eastern Rain," etc. - in favor of several that consistently featured fairy-tale or nautical imagery. The lyrics, in all of their fanciful, Byzantine Tolkienisms, can be taken or left - I, for one, embrace them! And so will anyone else who appreciates colorful escapism.
What carries the day here, though, is the wistful, melancholy, fiercely free and lonely mood created in the themes of these stories of being stung in life and love - and of stinging others ("Cactus Tree") - by Joni's singing of her haunting melodies. "I Had a King," with its arppegiated "tenement castle" dismissal of the former Mr. Mitchell and the oppression of traditional marriage, has long been my favorite, but there's so much else to appreciate here - "Sisotowbell Lane," "The Dawntreader" (which makes interesting use of the smoky low end of Joni's range - the only range she can use anymore!), the much-ballyhooed anthem "Cactus Tree," and especially the woefully underrated title song. Freedom, dreaminess, and lonely sorrow. I believe that Song to a Seagull (the album, but especially the song) is a personal crie de coeur for the loss of innocence - and a despairing of the possibility of ever finding a soulmate or making a relationship work. And yet there is a retained innocence in the stark openness of Joni's writing and performance. It captures a Joni Mitchell that was not before, and would never be again.
This album is so often condemned for being stuck in its time, but those aspects which date it the most are its very appeal, to these ears at least. It takes a certain charming naivete to engage in the hippy-dippy imaginings of some of these lyrics and the Loreena McKennitt-esque antiquarian vocal formality. If you like Nick Drake, Renaissance, Denny-era Fairport, or Astral Weeks, you should love this classic.Song To A Seagull OverviewNo Description Available.Genre: Popular MusicMedia Format: Compact DiskRating: Release Date: 10-MAR-1992
