Power Chords 1 ReviewWhen I received a review copy of this CD back in 1997 the track list and told me that Hip-O was no Rhino. The selection is too unfocused (the other two volumes not any better -- although it does go generally in chronological order) to be representative of Sixties "power chord" rock. This compilation series seems to be aimed at people who are dedicated listeners of those "classic rock" FM stations with shallow playlists that focus on '70s-'80s AOR and lite metal.
It starts off with some somewhat predictable songs that one might hear overplayed on oldies radio (at least before music from the Seventies started being lumped in). Then things settle comfortably into some psychedelic/garage (including the often-overlooked band Fever Tree) with the out-of-place cover of "Baby It's You" by Smith in the middle. The last four songs (which effectively derail this offering and leave you wondering what the point of this compilation was) includes some prog (if you don't recognize "Hocus Pocus" you might once the yodeling starts) and hard rock (sure Steppenwolf's cover of "The Pusher" might not get a lot of airplay but "Born to be Wild" or "Magic Carpet Ride" would have fit better in this compilation).
Musical neophytes might receive a distorted view of the decade's music and may doubtless be better served by listening to a better, more genre-based collection like the Nuggets (and Pebbles) series of garage rock (which also has some of the songs found on Power Chords Vol. 1).Power Chords 1 Overview
