The Screaming End: The Best Of Gene Vincent ReviewIts a shame that Gene Vincent isn't often mentioned in the same sentence as Elvis or Buddy Holly. He has been criminally overlooked for too long. This is probably due to the fact he only had a few hits, and never had any weak wimpy ballad crap. This is nothing but pure 100% rockabilly rebel music, a perfect example of why the music was so feared by conservative America, and with perfect reason. It was so much of a change from the Perry Como / Bing Crosby pop drivel that had ruled the charts for so long. Even more terrifying than Elvis the Pelvis was definatly Gene Vincent. Only Jerry Lee Lewis and Eddie Cochran challenge him for pure rockabilly rebellion. His influence can be found in many artist's afterwards - notably Jeff Beck, who acknowledges Gene as his primary inspiration for picking up the guitar. I can imagine The Beatles and Brian Setzer also being major fans as this is rock 'n' roll in its purest form. Three chords, catchy, rebellious, dangerous, sexy, dancable, teen angst - rock 'n' roll personified. You must buy this compilation, there is so much more to the man than just "Be-Bop-A-Lula". Also pick up his first two studio albums - two of the best records to come out of the first wave of rock. Let's rock again now!The Screaming End: The Best Of Gene Vincent Overview

Roll Over/Freedomburger ReviewAfter years of waiting for a CD re-issue, it is finally here. Roll Over is a perfect album, one that came at a perfect time in rock history. It stood in stark contrast to the bombast of the era (early 70s). It was (and still is) fresh, inventive pop that, to my mind, presaged the New Wave that was to come later in the decade. A true, obscure classic.Roll Over/Freedomburger Overview

Shine on Brightly Review1968's "Shine On Brightly" is Procol Harum's second album, and it's another classic Bach-meets-rock hybrid from Gary Brooker & company. "Quite Rightly So" and the title track are both Harum classics. "Skip Softly (My Moonbeams)" has a great ominous bounce to it. The gospel-esque "Wish Me Well" is another buried treasure from the band, as are "Rambling On" and "Magdelene (My Regal Zonophone)". Finally, Harum deliver the first of their two epic pieces in their catalog, the 17-minute "In Held Twas In I," a classical-rock suite containing 5 or 6 different movements, plus a couple of spoken word passages (Harum's other lenghty piece is the conceptual "The Worm & The Tree" from 1977's "Something Magic," but that's another review). "In Held Twas In I" is not for everybody---some fans say the various movements don't flow together too well---but I think it's a very adventurous piece, filled with lots of great moods & melodies. And, as one of rock's very first epic compositions, it's also quite groundbreaking. From start to finish, "Shine On Brightly" is another great milestone for Procol Harum.Shine on Brightly Overview

Eli & The 13th Confession ReviewIn my journey to absorb the music of Laura Nyro, for whatever reason, this album (along with "New York Tendaberry") took the longest for me to understand...but when I did, I was captivated by the journey that takes place from the opening notes to the closing exclamation.
As we've all heard about this album, it melds the components of jazz, pop, gospel, soul, Broadway and rock into a tasty brew that has yet to be matched by any one artist.
The writing is unparalleled. Laura's creative use of words...and her own creation of words makes this album completely distinct.
The instrumentation and production, shaped by Laura and Charlie Calello, is top notch..and beautifully presented in this remastered edition. The remastering helps bring out the many vocal nuances that Laura established through multi-layering (Particulary on "Eli's Comin'") and the incredible instrumental ornamentation (The flute effects on "Poverty Train", the beautiful strings on "December's Boudoir").
Highly, highly, highly recommended...and essential listening for the true musical seekers.Eli & The 13th Confession OverviewFull title - Eli & The Thirteenth Confession. Reissue of 1968 album featuring 'Sweet Blindness', 'Stoned Soul Picnic' & 3 previously unreleased demo bonus tracks 'Lu', 'Stoned Soul Picnic' & 'Emmie'. 2002.

Matthew Fisher/Strange Days ReviewI remember the day I held this CD in my hands for the first time. It felt like chills were running down my spine. You know,
Matthew's voice sounds so familiar after all these years
I've been listening to his songs on the radio. It's really
hard to explain how Matthew's songs made such a great impact
on people in my country. Not to mention that Matthew wrote a song considered to be among the 5 most played songs on the radio all over Hellas. It's none other than super all-time classic Why'd I Have To Fall In Love With You, a magic song filled with pathos & despair, so well built, so seductive you can't resist its charm. Though this 2 in 1 CD has some weak moments (to be honest), there are at least 5 loveable pop tunes
included here, songs like Can't stop Loving You Now or Can't
You Feel My Love that can make this CD a tender companion for your lazy afternoons.Matthew Fisher/Strange Days Overview

The Ultimate Peter & Gordon ReviewOne of a pair of almost lookalike duos (the other being Chad & Jeremy); these guys hit with the beautiful Lennon/McCartney song "A World Without Love" and took it to the top of the charts. The songs the Beatles threw P&G's way were probably less suited for the Fab Four than for them; the duo really did something good for these songs, most especially with "I Don't Wanna See You Again", probably my favorite of their first three. "Nobody I Know", though probably the weakest, still comes in with at least 4 stars.
They then switched gears from this groovy mid-tempo bounce into more a ballad mode, and stayed there for quite awhile. My favorite from this part of their career was their rendition of the Del Shannon tune "I Go to Pieces" which was a gorgeously mournful breakup/goodbye song. Buddy Holly's "True Love Ways" and McCartney's "Woman" are also quite stellar, and emotionally very satisfying.
In the latter part of their short career, they got into humorous songs, a bit like the Kinks did around the same time, but of course with a very different sound than the Davies crew, and a lighter touch in terms of the lyrics. When I first heard these songs as a callow youth, they kind of left me cold (I was a bit of a serious bloke at the time). But I now feel they are as high quality as their more beautiful and emotionally stunning earlier songs. The standouts here are, of course, "Lady Godiva" and "Knight in Rusty Armor". "Knight" is particularly awesome melodically, and very, very generous in the humor department. Quite quirky and cute . . . you might say that. "Sunday for Tea" is also very much the number. Very British, you know!
I often wonder how to compare their output/repertoire with that of Chad and Jeremy (both duos entered the U. S. charts for the first time in May of 1964). Chad & Jeremy never charted in Britain. They, when not doing big-time show tunes, have a rather folksy sound. Peter and Gordon were pure soft rock, and power pop once they entered their ballad phase. Though I might prefer Chad and Jeremy's overall vocal blend, it's really too close for me to call. I'd say, try them both out for size.
[Chad and Jeremy lasted a bit longer, even going through a so-called psychedelic phase, which however I find to be overly theatrical, both vocally and otherwise. There were plenty of others who fell into that kind of groove around the same time (Earth Opera, the Mothers of Invention, Pink Floyd, the Fugs, Love . . . the list is quite long.) I guess I just never grooved in that direction, except for short little gems here and there.]The Ultimate Peter & Gordon Overview

Very Best of War ReviewAfter all these years, revisiting the best of War (pretty much disc one of 'The Very Best of War') was an expected pleasure. Hearing what War had done in the years after their mid-seventies commercial peak (pretty much disc two) was an unexpected one.
Heavyweights in the days before hyper-demographic radio, War co-existed with the likes of the Rolling Stones, the Doobie Brothers and Elton John on FM playlists across the country. Their brand of latin-tinged r&b, coupled with a talent for jamming, struck a chord with listeners of the day, as War was something of a cross between the Allman Brothers Band and Graham Central Station. They were a rhythm and blues band whose frequently-joyful music crossed all racial boundaries.
And this collection gets it all down. Not only are the hits here ("Slipping Into Darkness", "Low Rider", "The World Is A Ghetto", "Why Can't We Be Friends" and "Gypsy Man"), but so are significant album tracks ("Four Cornered Room", "Don't Let No One Get You Down") and overlooked nuggets as well ("I'm The One Who Understands", "River Niger" and "East L.A."--which sports an amazing guest vocal from Jose Feliciano).
And the remastered sound, courtesy of Bill Inglot and Dan Hersch, just sparkles. The sonic detail is amazing, and with a multi-instrumental, polyrhythmic band like War, hearing it revealed is a truly awesome experience.
But 'The Very Best of War' isn't without its flaws: I'm not sure "Ballero" is the best representative of 'War Live!', "Galaxy" and "You Got The Power" are two very mediocre attempts at disco, and several other album tracks are depressingly pedestrian.
But in the end, this is a well done collection that provides a comprehensive look at War for less than an earlier War anthology costs. In short, this is one time I will urge people to go to War.Very Best of War Overview

Under The Covers, Vol. 1 Review"Under the Covers" is a solid album covering '60s and '70s pop tunes. Sweet and Hoffs have the talent and production chops to put together convincing remakes of some well known songsand some exciting obscurities. Mostly it works well, although Sweet should never again attempt early-period Beach Boys (he just can't sing up there effectively). The album is more a celebration of Sweet and Hoff's great taste (and Sweet's guitar prowess) than an album with anything urgent or fresh to say. It's a pleasant listen and a good way of getting lots of great tunes in one place. But it doesn't really do anything all that innovative or moving.Under The Covers, Vol. 1 OverviewWhat do alt-rock/power pop heroes like Susanna Hoffs ( The Bangles) and Mattew Sweet do on their time off? They get together in Mattew's comfy home studio and record a stunning album of their fovorite '60s pop hits ans rarities,of course! Columbia. 2006.

Who Knows Where the Time Goes ReviewThis effort is easily the single best album in Judy Collins' long and illustrous career. From the opening phrases of "Hello, Horray!" to the final chords of "Pretty Polly", this brilliant effort never stops delighting and amazing the listener with its unique combination of brilliant song writing and selection, vocal performances, and musical scoring and accompaniment. This one went off all the charts, folks, as her first effort after the blockbuster success she experienced with "Both Sides Now". With rock luminaries like Stephen Stills (who wrote his hit song, "Suite Judy Blue Eyes" about Collins) singing harmonies, and also playing bass and acoustic counterpoint to Judy's own acoustic guitar work, the album absolutely soars in songs like "Someday Soon", "My Father", "Who Knows Where The Time Goes", "Poor Immigrant" and "First Boy I Loved". There really isn't a single dog on the whole album, and the musical style and substance is truly timeless. Put it on the machine and sit back to be entertained, moved, and amazed at what this talented and ageless singer and some her friends and lovers have given to the ages. Simply put, this is an absolutely matchless piece of music history you should be able to experience and enjoy again and again. So enjoy!Who Knows Where the Time Goes OverviewOne of her finest, with Stephen Stills and Chris Ethridge supporting Judy on Leonard Cohen, Sandy Denny and Incredible String Band songs!

Gloria ReviewWhat an album! Not to take anything away from Van Morrison but if you lived on the NW side of Chicago, or in the NW suburbs in the Mid-60's, this was THE version of "Gloria." I don't want to analyze it too much but I think by taking the organ out, The Shadows made it a bit more primitive.
A couple of weeks ago, more than 35 years later, I'm at carnival in the Chicago burbs and some of the old Chicago rockers are playing there. This guy Ronnie Rice who used to be with the New Colony 6 does kind of a "human jukebox" gig where he comes out and plays a whole bunch of 60's songs, sometimes all the way through, sometimes just snippets. Anyway, he's at the carnival and he starts playing "Wild Night" by Van Morrison, then he starts "Brown Eyed Girl." He stops singing "Brown Eyed Girl" but keeps playing the chords. He says something like, "you might be wondering why I'm doing 2 Van songs in a row. Well, we got a guy whose band had a big hit with a Van Morrison song,....." and he brings out the Shadows of Knight's lead singer, Jimmy Sahns and they finish up "Brown Eyed Girl" and then break into "Gloria."
I was sitting there with a friend of mine, and she used to see The Shadows at the Cellar in Arlington Heights in the 60's. And for us, and especially her, it was a true rock and roll moment to see the leader of Chicago's rockin-est 60's band, back on his home turf.
So, if any of this makes any sense to you, do yourself a favor and pick up this gem of garage rock from the Chicago suburbs!Gloria Overview

Circus Maximus ReviewI almost never recommend an album on the basis of the strength of one song, but here I'll make an exception. "Wind" carries this album and completely blows the rest of the songs away. I first heard the song on Phoenix FM station KDKB, a station that was once in the vanguard of progressive music, back in the mid-70s. I suspected that the band received airplay only because of the Jerry Jeff Walker connection yet there is very little Walker influence apparent in its music. Without Walker, this album would likely have gotten no airplay and would have faced quick consignment to the cutout bins. When I bought the album in order to own a recording of Wind, I was disappointed in the utter lack of merit in any of the other songs. But I was pleased that I now owned a copy of that sophisticated jewel of a song I wanted - Wind - and that five-star, piano-driven jazzy tune is the one song that makes the album worthwhile. If you haven't heard Wind, you owe it to yourself to ensure that you do.Circus Maximus Overview

Song for Juli ReviewI've worn this out in four formats-8 track, cassette, lp and finally cd. This is 70's california pop at it's best. Solid songs, solid rhythm section, a brilliant solist (Jim Rothmeil) perfect piano parts and one of the most distinctive voices in pop music. A little pop, a little jazz, a little country, just a great record.
The highlight is probably the jazzy Ridgetop, Jesse's ode to his Marin County home, followed closely by the title cut (a song about his then 6 year old daughter) and a cajun influenced Lafayette Waltz/Jambalaya

Jazz Samba ReviewHow do you critique the album that started an era? Forty years later, Jazz Samba is still one of the most relaxing, rhythmically pleasing albums made. All instrumental, with the tenor sax of Stan Getz (the guy John Coltrane professed to admire!) and inspired guitar of Charlie Byrd. The entire album was recorded in one session in the performance hall of a Washington, D.C., church, and it puts legions of studio albums to shame.
While Desafinado and Bahia are the best known tracks, the album is a seamless experience and it is difficult to single out certain songs as superior. If Getz is one of the masters of the tenor saxophone, it is also hard to separate his proficiency from the effort as a whole -- it truly comes across as a tight ensemble effort. (For a contrast, Duke Ellington's masterful and equally essential Money Jungle released the same year finds the trio of Ellington, Mingus and Max Roach locked in a musical duel on a couple of tracks.)
Favorites? I enjoy Samba de Uma Nota So, but every time I reach for Jazz Samba I alway listen to the entire album. At least once. This and Getz/Gilberto belong in every jazz collection.Jazz Samba Overview

12 X 5 ReviewThis is the remastered super audio CDs (SACD) of the Stones ABCKO catalog (which includes all the early Decca/London material. ABCKO acquired the Stones' catalog after Allen Klein became their manager in 1965. The legal battles during the 70s produced releases that the Stones opposed (they took out full page adds asking fans not to buy them), including the controversial Metamorphosis releases (which are now available on CD for the 1st time ever). But the sad fact is that the Stones lost control of their great early material. With these remastered SACD releases, we at last have some idea of what they really sounded like in the studio. I guess if we had these 40 years ago they would have ended up Greatest Rock And Roll Band in the Universe instead of just our tiny little World.
This is the Stones 2nd US album, released Oct 23, 1964. It cemented the early blues band legend with tracks from their famous Chess Studios session in Chicago during the 1st American tour (Muddy Waters helped carry their gear into the studio) and tracks recorded at Regent Sound in London. Essentially, this is the album that finalized their status as champions of Chicago blues.
The album starts with Check Berry's Around And Around, which the Stones had been doing as a show stopper in the UK, the big hits Time Is On My Side and It's All Over Now, and the great slow blues numbers Confessin' The Blues & Good Times Bad Times. Although they used to do a lot of instrumentals, 2120 S. Michigan seems to have survived as the only memory of this part of the early Stones familiar to most fans. Personally I always liked Congratulations, but never cared for their version of Susie Q, although it was very popular at the time.
The tracks recorded June 10-11, 1964 at Chess Studios in Chicago were:
.....Around And Around
.....Confessin' The Blues
.....Empty Heart
.....Good Times Bad Times
.....It's All Over Now
.....2120 S. Michigan version 2
.....If You Need Me)
Tracks recorded at Regent Sound in London were done on Feb 25, 1964
.....Susie Q
June 24-26, 1964
.....Time Is On My Side version 1
.....Congratulations
Sep 28-29, 1964
.....Under The Boardwalk
.....Grown Up Wrong
This album was never released in the UK, however the tracks on it were released in the UK as follows:
6-26-64 It's All Over Now, Good Times Bad Times
8-14-64 Five by Five EP - If You Need Me, Empty Heart, 2120 S. Michigan version 1, Confessin' the Blues, Around and Around
1-16-65 The Rolling Stones No. 2 - Time Is On My Side version 1, Grown Up Wrong, Under The Boardwalk, Susie Q
Congratulations was not released in the UK until 10-5-73 on the album No Stone Unturned
This information comes from "It's Only Rock And Roll: The Ultimate Guide To The Rolling Stones" by Karnbach and Bernson and from my own collection.12 X 5 Overview12 X 5 includes material recorded by the Stones at Chicago's Chess Studios (home to the band's idols Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf) on their first US tour. Though this document of the group's early R&B period kicks off with a couple of covers from unsurprising sources (Chuck Berry's "Around and Around,") Mick and Keith waste little time in displaying their own compositional acumen. The acoustic-based, bluesy "Good Times, Bad Times" harkens back to even earlier, more seminal Stones influences than Berry, as does the instrumental "2120 South Michigan Avenue," where the blues-obsessed Jagger's harp is featured a la his hero Little Walter. The downbeat, Arthur Alexanderish "Congratulations" is an effective expression of romantic melancholy, complete with acoustic guitar solo. The slide guitar chords on "Grown Up Wrong" echo another early blues influence, Elmore James. The milestones on this album are two R&B covers to which the Stones take more than a rote approach, "It's All Over Now" and the majestic "Time Is On My Side," which they make completely their own.

Nashville Skyline (Reis) Review"Nashville Skyline" was released in 1969, a country-rock album before country rock.
It is a warm, pleasant record, not one of Dylan's classic albums, excactly, but a great record by almost any other standard. And the songs are unusually short and tight (all of them clock in at less than four minutes), literate, low-key love songs about as far away from Dylan's usual surreal imagery as you can imagine.
On the quiet, wistful "Girl From The North Country", Dylan duets with one of the few men who can just about match his own reputation is the music business, the late, great Johnny Cash.
And those who are usually turned off by Dylan's nasal whine of a voice should pick up this album right away...he delivers in a much gentler, softer voice, almost a baritone, employing a little bit of the technique of an opera singer to produce a pleasant low croon which threw many listeners for a loop (and enhanced Dylan's AM radio appeal).
Highlights include "I Threw It All Away", the almost Eagles-like "Tell Me That It Isn't True", and of course the classic "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You". That song has been cited more than once as one of Dylan's own personal favorites, a gentle mid-tempo shuffle in traditional country format (a I-IV-V chord progression), and one of Dylan's best and most sensitive vocals. It has been reinterpreted live as a raucous rock song, but this simple original version has so much charm...the song features some wonderful rolling piano and some fluid steel guitar by Pete Drake.
The gently rolling "Lay Lady Lay" is another classic, perhaps the most memorable song here, highlighted by Dylan's "new" voice and a rock n' roll-flavoured bridge with some brief, bluesy guitar licks.
"Nashville Skyline" is not the greatest artistic achievement in Bob Dylan's catalogue, but it is a highly skilled record with several excellent songs at its core. Very enjoyable.Nashville Skyline (Reis) Overview

Chicago Transit Authority ReviewFew bands in history have produced a greater quantity of banal pop music than Chicago, so it's always a shock to play this album and remember just how cutting edge they were, how confident, brash and aggressive they sounded, in their first release. Few albums can boast as many outstanding performances as "Chicago Transit Authority", or "CTA", and with the exception of the Beatles, no band I know of ever boasted three lead singers as fine as Terry Kath, Robert Lamm and Peter Cetera.
"Beginnings" features a great vocal by Robert, lots of 7th chords, a gradually emerging latin beat, and fantastic trombone and trumpet solos. "South California Purples", uses long fade-in, fade-out brass notes, laid down on top of the power blues bass. "Poem 58" is a guitar tour de force by Terry morphing into a rousing, sexy, blues love song. Check out the intro by Terry, joined by Peter's bass rising into the fray, my favorite moment on the album. "I'm a Man" features all three singers strutting their stuff in succession to a jumpy, twitchy layer of percussion, putting even the fine version sung by Steve Winwood and the Spencer Davis Group into the dustbin of history. "Questions 67 and 68" is perfect power-pop. These are just my favorites, but there isn't a bad cut on here.
In 1969 Blood Sweat and Tears had the hit singles and the grammys, but this was the horn band with the most guts and impact, and was the true musical and spiritual descendent of the original Al Kooper-led BST of 1967. Much, but not all of it still sounds youthful and fresh 34 years after its release. By 1972 Chicago had hit rock bottom (of musical significance, not the charts), but in this original recording, they earned the right to appropriate the name of the city that was their home.Chicago Transit Authority OverviewTheir audacious debut double album from 1969 featured the hits Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?; Questions 67 & 68 , and I'm a Man .

Sweet Baby James ReviewWith the launching of this album, a thirty-year career was sent into high orbit. Of course, it is still up there, spinning and lightening our loads as we make our way through the days and evenings of our lives. If the baby boomers have a long-play soundtrack to their lives, most of the songs on this album would be on it, beginning with "Sweet Baby James", a lullaby written for his nephew but detailing his voluntary `escape' from the Austin Riggs center in Stockbridge. Massachusetts, riding down the turnpike to Boston, and on to London, where he was `discovered' by the Beatles.
Then there is "Fire and Rain", another autobiographical tune that was one of the biggest smash hits of all time, one covered by more solo artists than any other, and "Country Road", by now instantly identified by its opening chords by thousands of Taylor fans. It is all here, folks; the voice, the songs, and the guitar work that made James Taylor the superstar/singer/songwriter laureate of the seventies. Along with John Denver, Cat Stevens, Elton John, and Van Morrison, he virtually revolutionized popular music for a generation with his very personal, often intense, and always very approachable and melodic approach to music. There are hours and hours of wonderful experience in store for anyone with this album, whether you've come down in a space ship and are just introducing yourself to his work, or you are an old friend stopping by to sit on the front porch for a spell while Mudslide Slim plays and sings in his unforgettable voice for you. Enjoy!Sweet Baby James OverviewJapanese only SHM paper sleeve pressing. Features 2010 Remastering. The Monkees - Greatest Hits ReviewThis is an odd collection to call "Greatest Hits". It doesn't contain a complete collection of singles... Its debatable whether an album-only track like 'I Wanna Be Free' deserves inclusion over say, 'For Pete's Sake', or 'Cuddly Toy'. Likewise, 'D.W. Washburn' -- which was assuredly never a hit -- stands out from the rest of the tracks like a pothole in the road.
If you?re a completist, you may want to buy this if only because its the only single disc that contains 'Washburn' and 'Its Nice To Be With You'.
If you?re looking for a single-disc collection of the best Monkees songs, go for 'Best of The Monkees" which has 25 songs on one disc, and a much more balanced selection of songs that represented The Monkees's best work from their original run.The Monkees - Greatest Hits Overview20 tracks that include every Top 10 single and a booklet...'nuff said! Includes single versions of Pleasant Valley Sunday; (I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone; Porpoise Song , and Listen to the Band; Last Train to Clarksville; (Theme from) The Monkees; I'm a Believer; A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You; Daydream Believer; Valleri; Words; D.W. Washburn , and more.

The Essential Neil Diamond ReviewI own just about every Neil Diamond album prior to 1995 (mostly LP's). I have been a serious fan since high school (late 60's).
If you are thinking that this would be a good "Greatest Hits" album to have, think again.
About half of these tracks are recorded from live concert performances, and many of those are of low musical quality. "Remastering" does no good when you are starting with junk to begin with.
If you like "live" recordings (and we are NOT talking about "Hot August Night" quality here), then you may like this CD.
If what you want is what your heard on the radio way back when, then half of this collection is going to seriously disappoint you.The Essential Neil Diamond Overview30 tracks from all phases of his career, including every Top 10 hit from the Bang, Uni, Columbia and even Capitol labels (which is really unprecedented)! Includes Cherry, Cherry; Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon; Kentucky Woman; Red Red Wine; Holly Holy; Sweet Caroline; Cracklin' Rosie; Song Sung Blue; Love on the Rocks; Hello Again; America; I Am I Said; Longfellow Serenade; You Don't Bring Me Flowers , and more.
