The Screaming End: The Best Of Gene Vincent ReviewIts a shame that Gene Vincent isn't often mentioned in the same sentence as Elvis or Buddy Holly. He has been criminally overlooked for too long. This is probably due to the fact he only had a few hits, and never had any weak wimpy ballad crap. This is nothing but pure 100% rockabilly rebel music, a perfect example of why the music was so feared by conservative America, and with perfect reason. It was so much of a change from the Perry Como / Bing Crosby pop drivel that had ruled the charts for so long. Even more terrifying than Elvis the Pelvis was definatly Gene Vincent. Only Jerry Lee Lewis and Eddie Cochran challenge him for pure rockabilly rebellion. His influence can be found in many artist's afterwards - notably Jeff Beck, who acknowledges Gene as his primary inspiration for picking up the guitar. I can imagine The Beatles and Brian Setzer also being major fans as this is rock 'n' roll in its purest form. Three chords, catchy, rebellious, dangerous, sexy, dancable, teen angst - rock 'n' roll personified. You must buy this compilation, there is so much more to the man than just "Be-Bop-A-Lula". Also pick up his first two studio albums - two of the best records to come out of the first wave of rock. Let's rock again now!The Screaming End: The Best Of Gene Vincent Overview

For the Punx ReviewThe Casualties are the most DIY band exisiting at the moment...like all the bands on Punk Core Records they are bringing back the era of old fashioned street punk/oi! that was lost in the 90's because punk got too poppy. It is very true that punk is not what you wear , but it doesnt mean going balistic either because you see this band dressed this way...The Casualties are simply showing off their love for old style fashioned street punk including the fashions of that time.not only that but they play some fast and loud music without a care in the world for the "rules" and the whole "hey punk is about making a difference" things...they believe in punk for the sake of punk
This album "For The Punx"...is a slice full of the raw street punk sound. Lyrically...hey they're not college professors..but that doesnt make this album any less enjoyable..the songs are repetive in choruses ..but lyrically it doesnt matter anyway because Jorge's vocals are so nasty nobody can understand a word he says without a handy lyric sheet...but some of the lyrics on here are actually good "Destruction and Hate" is the best example of this when compared to "Punx & Skinz"..or "Punk Rock Love"..
Musically it's thrashy and loud...and even in some places melodic("Punk Rock Love" which is actually a parody of cheesy love song punk ). Other faves is "Chaos Punx"..( which the lyrics are sung in spanish ).."Ugly Bastards"..great song with great lyrics
"Casualties"..with a funny excerpt in the begining
"For the Punx" , "City Life" , "Police Brutality"..just a great street punk album
This album represents what good punk rock should be...simplicity..that was what punk was founded on..look at the Ramones who are considered to be one of the greatest punk bands ever..dumb lyrics , 3 chords , it works
The Casualties don't wanna just sell records..they don't care about being rock-stars...it's punk rock for the sake of punk rock..no cliche idealims...and raw oi!
Buy this if you are a true street/oi fanFor the Punx Overview

Binocular ReviewI somewhat unintentionally stumbled across this cd. I gave it a listen, and I was hooked. To be honest, it sort of scared me that I was hooked so swiftly. I hadn't heard of Binocular before, and I didn't really know what market it was that he was/is after. SO, the boy-band-hating side of me sort of said, "do you really want this, not knowing where it's headed?" A piece of me feared that this cd would be bought by someone who would also buy Backstreet Boys or Spice Girls.
Then, I continued listening to it, and it was/is simply too dam* good to pass up. The songs are absolutely beautiful. Some are forlorn/melancholic type songs, others are totally uplifting. Musically, he sounds a little like Savage Garden, or, if anyone remembers them, When In Rome (of "The Promise" fame). However, this guy writes and records all his own music, and he plays all the instruments. This is truly a one-man show.
Given the fact that he has chosen to go with the enigmatic name "Binocular," I'm suspecting he isn't after the mass-market, teeny-bopper, boy-band-crazed world of sugar-coated, MTV thrill of the week garbage. Otherwise, I'm sure he would have opted for the name Nick G. (or Justin, Blake, Mikey, Johnny, etc), and I know he wouldn't have written, recorded, played and produced the ENTIRE album himself in his NYC apartment. So, I feel pretty dam* secure owning this cd and having it my collection years from now.
Whatever your tastes, this is truly beautifully crafted, well written and well played music. It is a cd that, very unusually, can be played in its entirety, without having to skip certain tracks. Every song on this cd is awesome.
To give you a little more about the gist of it, he's on the Maverick label, which is what Madonna has been putting her stuff out on in recent years. Given that, if you know Madonna's recent sound (the techno-ey/synthed stuff underlying her music by the likes of William Orbit and Mirwais productions), expect that here too. Also, the cd was mixed by Mark Saunders who, for years now, has been doing stuff with Erasure and Depeche Mode. So there too, expect that highly-synthed keyboard sound underlying the rest of the music. But, having said all that, please understand that this isn't a techno-ey cd. Note I stated UNDERLYING. The most prominent feature of the cd is beautiful acoustic guitar and amazing vocals.
You will not regret getting this cd. Come what may for this guy's future (huge super-star sellout, or 102nd avenue street bum), the music (and that's really what it's all about, not image), is amazing, beautiful, and touching from start to finish. Period.Binocular Overview

See How We Are ReviewI really like this cd. I come at it from a completely different direction than most X fans. I never was an X fan, (not much airplay in the east) but I am a fan of John Doe's solo work. So, I am working my way backward through his catalogue. Most reviews seem to say that this was the first mainstream X cd, much too MOR, and even Exene seems to feel that way in the liner notes. However, I don't see this as part of the X flow because I don't have their earlier stuff. I can judge it strictly on merit. And it is terrific. I don't think there is a weak track until Holiday Story, and that is followed by Surprise Surprise which takes you right back to the high that Left and Right gave you. 4th of July and the title track are excellent. In The Time It Takes and When It Rains are just as good. Billy Zoom fans may miss him, but the guitar work is terrific, and the drumming is outstanding. John and Exene sing so well together, especially when she follows his lead. Maybe this is not like previous X albums, but it is what it is, a slice of sound from the band at a different point in time. And it is really good. Old X fans may think it heresy to like this cd this much, but the energy level here is fantastic.See How We Are Overview

The Decline ReviewSo the e.p. is out, and those of us who have actually heard it now know the truth:
1. No ska. 2. No humor, except of the very very dark variety. 3. Only one song.
But that one song-- all eighteen minutes of it-- is a doozy. It has peaks and valleys, climaxes and resolutions and codas. It's a longform composition in punk, "The Grand Wazoo" for skaters. It's ambitious and political, and above all, very good.
Amazingly, even though NOFX seems have gone all prog-rock on us with the concept, the execution is still true to their style. It's a testament to the abilities of the group that eighteen continuous minutes of punk, with no sing-song choruses, doesn't bore the listener. On the contrary: it's one of their best recordings. The Decline Overview

Lords of the New Church ReviewIf anyone reading this is a fan of the Dead Boys, the Damned, or even Sham 69 do yourself a favor and pick this one up. The drums sound fantastic, Bators voice still spits a lot of venom, it has goth textures but its not goth, and the album does what a lot of other side projects forget to do: it rocks. Almost every track works the two standouts being the openers "New Church" and "Russian Roulette". The bonus tracks offer a nice contrast and you can see why they were left off, still good songs though. Pick it up.Lords of the New Church Overview

Horses ReviewI saw Patti read poetry alone. I saw Patti & Lenny at St. Marks Church. I saw Patti, Lenny & Richard at Max's. I was there at her last gig at the Academy of Music before a long hiatus. I rejoiced at her comeback performance at the Ritz after Fred "Sonic" Smith's passing. I saw Patti so often she once told me at a CCNY poetry reading, "You've seen me more than my manager!" All that I love about rock & roll is embodied in "Horses." When I listen I hear the Shangrilas in her girl-group vocals. Early Stones with Brian Jones in her swagger. Hardly ever do poetry and 3-chord rock marry so seamlessly. When she intones, "Suddenly, Johnny, gets the feeling, he's surrounded by horses, horses, horses...do you know how to pony?" it still makes my heart beat faster. Patti Smith is the original Riot Grrrl. The first woman, after Grace Slick, to not be a "my man done left me" victim. She hit a home run out of the ballpark with this record, uneclipsed even 30 years later. I still listen to everything she records, and see her & the band as often as they play live. She set the bar high. It hasn't dated in all these years.Horses OverviewJapanese only SHM-CD (Super High Material CD - playable on all CD players) pressing includes one bonus track. A Wizard, A True Star ReviewTry to imagine: the year is 1973, you're already well on yourway to being a die-hard Todd fan (a lifer), you were thrilled by hislast album, "Something/Anything", and you buy his next one (this one) the very day it comes out. You put the record on your turntable and for the next 59 minutes or so you sit transfixed at the sound of what you are hearing. It's Todd all right, but like you've never heard him before.
"A Wizard, A True Star" is one of the most revolutionary albums ever recorded - Todd's 'Sgt. Pepper' if you will - and in the 27 years since it came out I have yet to hear anything that remotely resembles it, not even from Zappa (80's band Game Theory's "Lolita Nation" begins to approach). Revolutionary in both the personal sense and recording industry sense, AWATS almost single-handedly created the Todd persona that his fans know and love. Listening to this album now is still the same mind-bending/altering experience it was then...and that's good. Peter Pan ("Never Never Land") mixes with Motown (the "Ooh Baby Baby" medley), touches of punk ("You Need Your Head"), Todd's own perfect pop ("Sometimes I Don't Know What to Feel"), and the just plain bizarre ("Da da Dali"). The man could literally do just about anything and has never been afraid to followed his creative impulses, wherever they've taken him. A true original. Personal favorite: "When the ( ) Hits the Fan/Sunset Blvd." - but that's just me.
There's a lot to love here in the soundscape, not the least of which is Todd's musical risk-taking - experimental pop music at its best. There just aren't enough superlatives for this album or its creator. ENDA Wizard, A True Star Overview

Feel Good Record of the Year ReviewAlthough I can understand why people aren't as fond of this CD, as say, More Betterness, I can't help but disagree. I've been a NUFAN fan for a long time, and seen them live numerous times. Perhaps watching them perform these songs live has caused me to be biased, but I thoroughly enjoy all of the songs on this CD.
The Biggest Lie and I Wanna Be Wrong are two of my favorite NUFAN songs ever. Granted the slower songs can really throw the pace off on this album, I think that the faster songs really bring back a lot of energy that they had lost with their last record, which I thought was terrible.
I'm glad that this album has picked up some steam from their last, and I believe that this is a really solid release from No Use For A Name.Feel Good Record of the Year Overview

Today's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes ReviewPropagandhi is simply unable to write a bad song. I swear to it. I'm not gonna lie to you, this album is a lot different than their others. The music is a lot more hardcore, but that doesn't mean it's not good. This CD is still very awesome. I think some of the change in style might be to the departure of their old bassist, who did some singing on their old CDs. Their new bassist, Todd fits right in though. He even sings on some of these songs too. On most of the really hardcore ones. This is a must have. I've been waiting for this CD for a long time, just as everyone else has, and believe me, it won't dissapoint you. Go gey it, todayToday's Empires, Tomorrow's Ashes Overview

I Heard They Suck Live ReviewThis is my favorite CD in the world. When I say that NOFX is the greatest punk band, it is not just MY opinion. An overwhelming amount of people know that NOFX are just plain the greatest at writing exciting punk music that doesn't get old as they evolve through the years. This live CD has to be bought by YOU! I'm not writing this review for my health. I'm doing it to help YOU make a good CD buying decision. NOFX chose some great songs to put on this. If you are skeptical about buying this because it's live, forget that. The fact that it's live makes it all the better. The recording is great; the best recording on a live CD I've ever heard. All the songs are performed better than on their original CD's and the guitars are really smooth. Hefe and Melvin work really well together and the drums are very clean. Fat Mike's voice is strong and Hefe's trumpet sounds great, especially on "Bob". I also enjoy how the band speaks with each other and interacts with the audience between songs, it makes you feel like you're actually experiencing it. In closing, if you are at least 35% sure that you want this CD, buy it. You will definetely not regret it one bit. I recommend it over all of their studio CD's. It's just that great.I Heard They Suck Live Overview

Longest Line ReviewThe Longest Line introduced the versatile guitar, trumpet, vocal, and lyrical talents of El Hefe - the manic Hispanic. El Hefe replaced Dave Cassilas on lead guitar to round out the NOFX line up (in more ways than one).
El Hefe debuts on this album with the song "Kill All the White Man." It's a very simple and straight forward song about the Mexican minorities! It's pretty hilarious. More serious tracks are on this CD however, such as Remnants and Death of John Smith.
This is definitely one of NOFX's better albums with the only problem being that it's too short. The reason it is so short is that they were in the middle of making White Trash, Two Heebs and a Bean and had just finished Ribbed... they also made it to introduce the talents of El Hefe... they were really stoked to have him join the band.
The sound of this album ranges from the fast and furious sound of Remnants to the slower parts of The Death of John Smith and Kill All the White Man. Additional background vocals on this album come from Joey Cape of Lagwagon (which song, I'm not sure)... definitely worth checking out.
Here's what NOFX has to say on this album:
On Life - "Life's too short to just barely exist" - Remnants
On Love - "Don't be fooled by teardrops, they're worth 1,000 lies" - Stranded
Overall, this is a great disc. And... it's cheaper than the other ones too! Go pick it up and play it over and over again! 100% NOFX at it's best!

Regaining Unconsciousness ReviewThere is no longer that much doubt in my mind that this 15 minute long ear candy is NOFX's best release to date! In fact I will not only go as far as to say this is the best NOFX release to date, but will also even say that this is quite possibly the best release from any band to date with the only possible exception is the "Land of the Free?" Pennywise CD! I admit I had my doubts when I first picked up this EP. I was worried that this CD was going to be the start of the downfall of NOFX. However, I was so fu:cken wrong that I am now smacking myself over the head for thinking it! If you are having your doubts and thinking that they are about to turn into a total pop/punk band that isn't really all that great because of the Rancid-NOFX split cover album: Think again! This is nothing of the sort and nothing short of amazing!
Words can't explain just how fantastic the sound to this CD is. It's NOFX like you never could possibly imagine until you hear it! It is fantastic progression from "Pump Up the Valuum". However, comparing this to releases in earlier in NOFX's career hardly does this release justice to how great it really is! The lyrics to this album are by far the most political release by NOFX to date (with the exception of "The Decline" but hey, that was just one song). As track 2-4 out of 5 tracks are all political (track 5 being an untitled preview to the next CD, more on that later). But seriously, what do you expect with all the Bs currently going on right now? The lyrics to this CD go beyond basic "the Decline" easy to understand (minus the metaphors) political lyrics. Rather than just a simple call for revolution, they go down to specifics of all the madness going on in today's world. The intelligence and sophistication of this CD is about just as high as those of Crass! And yet at the same time NOFX's fantastic sense of humor is still present! This album should shut up the political punk elitists who bash NOFX lyrics when they hear this!! This may turn off some NOFX fans but I am most certainly not one of them!
This CD starts off with "Medio-Core" which is a fantastic opening song that clearly shows the progression NOFX has made since "Pump Up the Valuum". The lyrics are about unoriginal punk bands as well as the today's punk rock in general. Next is the song "Idiots are taking Over" which marks the beginning of a new more political NOFX. Ironically with a sound a lot like "The Decline". However, I have to say that personally when I hear this song I can't help be reminded of them meaning THE OPPOSITE of what the actual mean (ie: we, leftists, are taking over). I have to say other than this country turning into a bunch of nationalists, I disagree with NOFX here. Next is my personal favourite "Franco Un-American" which talks about so many political issues it's impossible to take it all in the first time around. It's a slower song that I guess could be compared to something top-notch from their "So Long...." album. Next up is the last listed track, "Hardcore 84" which as said on the back is the only actual song on here NOT to be released on their upcoming full Length. Almost practically the entire song is sung by Melvin and is also clearly the fastest song on this CD. So obviously, these two things put together very much give it a rawer sound, much like their earlier work. Old fans disappointed with the new sound will praise this song I think. Then Finally, is the final bonus track which is done a lot like a commercial. With little excerpts from each song and quite hilarious! It is a total teaser! I'd tell you some of the jokes from it but I wouldn't want to spoil it for you, now would I?
So overall, NOFX's newest release is an amazing work of art that is not to be passed up by any NOFX fan. I can't wait until "The War on Errorism" comes out on May 6th. There is no doubt about it, I will be FIRST in line when it does. Peace.Regaining Unconsciousness Overview

Making Friends ReviewThis cd is so great. I've had it for probably 5 months or more and still love it. All I wanna say is buy this cd before you buy any of their others. If you already have this cd, buy "Leche Con Carne". This cd is a rarity in that all the songs are great and don't get old. I have 258 cds and this one is in the top 5% as far as good albums go. After you have this cd, buy all the Lagwagon cds starting with "Trashed" because they compare well with NUFAN and are probably a little better aside from the fact that this cd ROCKS!Making Friends Overview

Trashed ReviewThis is Lagwagon's best album, though all of them are extremely good and receive 5 stars in my book. Thrashing guitars and base lines and insane drum change-ups create a very technical yet melodic sound that grows on you every time you listen and never gets old. Joey's lyrics are deep and powerful and his voice blends into the music like another instrument. A must-have for anyone into hard music. In my opinion--this is one of the most talented and original bands I have ever heardTrashed Overview
