Sweet Exchange ReviewHeather Payne, formerly known as the founder and voice behind Point of Grace has ventured out on her own for her first ever solo album "Sweet Exchange," available nationwide Sept. 14. "Sweet Exchange" features Heather's signature vocals paired with timeless hymns and anthems of the church while adding an updated style to create her signature sound. Featuring her first single "Rock of Ages," in addition to other classics "Holy Holy Holy" and the heartfelt anthem "My Jesus," Heather's soaring yet intimate voice take us on a journey of a "sweet exchange.""Sweet Exchange" is a fresh take on the timeless hymns of the church. Modern arrangements, new choruses, and sometimes-complete re-imaginations help these deep and meaningful songs shine. So what makes a retired artist from one of the most successful groups in Christian music history decide to record a new album full of old hymns? A childhood memory helps explain: "I remember when I was very young, and my mom used to let me stand on the pew beside her in church. She let me hold the hymnal, even though I couldn't even read! I felt so big. I learned the hymns that way, just singing along. I want that for my kids now." It was the Shema from Deuteronomy 6, with the compelling call to impress the commands of the Lord on your children all day long, that struck Payne when she moved to Louisville in 2002. "I memorized that passage because we were starting to have kids and I wanted that in my mind and heart. As more kids were born, the Lord kept bringing it back up. Are you teaching them diligently? When you're traveling the way I was, there was no diligence or consistency or excellence."
With that context, I greatly enjoyed hearing one of my favorite female vocalists sing these amazing hymns. I feel that same calling as a father of 3 young daughters to teach them diligently the Word of God and to pass on to my girls the biblical truths woven throughout the classic hymns of the faith. Heather does an amazing job in making these songs sound fresh and contemporary. Some highlights for me are "O For A Thousand Tongues To Sing" which was also recently covered by David Crowder*Band, "Rock Of Ages" which was recently covered by Chris Rice, "Jesus Paid It All" and "Pass Me Not." In the past all of those songs have been recorded in a classic slow and reflective style, but not on this album. In fact, if you've liked David Crowder's upbeat musical recordings of hymns like his version of "Come Thou Fount," then this album is for you. Heather also infuses some extra lyrics in "Rock Of Ages" where she blends the biblical truth of "On Christ The Solid Rock I Stand" into her fresh and catchy chorus of "Rock Of Ages." If like me, you've always enjoyed Heather's vocals and you want to hear great recordings of hymns, get "Sweet Exchange" and you won't regret it.Sweet Exchange Overview
