All Things Are Possible ReviewFirst of all, I always loved America and thought that Dan Peek's voice and melodies were out of this world. Songs like "Lonely People", "Glad to See You", "Old Virginia", etc. There are many songs during his tenure with America that are just plain beautiful without saying that the other two members were shabby. They also had a tasty repertoire of songs, but I always thought that Dan Peek had some awesome songs! How about "Don't Cross the River", WoW! They still sound as good today as they did in the past. I am not saying that everything he wrote was awesome but surely enjoyed his work throughout his stay with America. Funny, but when I went to AMG to check them out it seems the critics were not too partial to America's body of work. Too simplistic? Too melodious? I'll never know. I expected to see at least four (4) stars for some of their efforts but lo and behold, I think 3 was the max they received. That is fine, America with "Ventura Highway", "Sandman", "Tin Man", "Sister Golden Hair Surprise?" is that the name?, anywhoo, some of these songs go all the way to the start of the American Dream for me. What voices!
When I heard that Dan Peek had left America I was somewhat saddened but not really surprised! I could tell by his lyrics that he was not very happy with the fast lane of those days. When I heard he had released a Christian Album I immediately bought it at a local christian store in Costa Mesa, California. I am talking about 20 years? When I heard "All Things Are Possible" I loved it from the start. Yes, the songs were short and simple but something about the cassette (that was the format available at the time and it did not last very long, mind you) that brought the best in me. It was my first official christian album I had ever bought and in those days the christian music business was in its infancy. It kind of meant that patrons of christian music were devoted christians. I was not. I was a party monster more part of the crazy lifestyle Los Angeles and neighbouring Orange County had to offer than the limited and devoted lifestyle christians were known for. Party here, fast lane there, it did get old with time and regrets and misfortunes were all part of the package together with the loudest concerts and good times I probably will ever know. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, sort of speak. Dan Peek's "All Things Are Possible" have some songs in it that I can't still forget and that is saying a lot for a release so many years old. The title "All Things Are Possible" is just a beautiful song, the next song following "Divine Lady" is such a sweet tune, following with "Forgive me, Forgive you" (some of these long nights always led to serious regrets and a desire to have a life of health and spiritual light and this song spoke of the need to be forgiven but most important to be able to forgive, which is essential if one hopes to reach higher grounds in the spiritual realm"). I better slow down, I am getting too preachy and that is not my intention. There are many songs that make this album a 5 star album for me. Yes, I admit I did not like a couple as much as I did the others, but overall this is one album I am going to buy today for the good memories it delivers. What a voice, how about "Be a lighthouse for me and my ship lost in the sea, guide me to the safe harbor in your arms..." Beauty! Also, in the album there is a song he kind of dedicates to his former bandmates and I think is in response to a song the Blond Guy in America had sung about him by the name of "I don't believe in miracles" (a tasty song, by the way) and he replied with this one, something about "I told you before that I would take no more, you thought I was yours but now you know for sure, and that's the reason why I had to say goodbye" or something to that effect. This is the album I love the most of his Christian efforts, the ones that followed maybe one song or two, he had lost the magic touch. He never seemed to regain the touch he had with his best work with America or the quality of "All Things Are Possible", but he surely deserves 5 stars for this one. Short songs filled with inspiration and yes, Jesus his motivating force but a masterpiece to me never the less. Kind of like Bob Dylan when he went the same route and wrote some awesome songs in "Slow Train Coming" and "Shot of Love", specially and I do not know in which of his christian albums it was in, the song "Every Grain of Sand". Dylan and Peek are totally different but they both had the same inspiration during that period and some of these songs they made are so good it is not even funny. If you get a chance google the lyrics for "Every Grain of Sand" by Bob Dylan and believe me, this one is a very rare jewel you will find. Dan Peek's "All Things Are Possible" is a Beauty. 5 stars then and 5 stars now!All Things Are Possible Overview

Consider the Cost ReviewThis was an album my mother used to play in the car when I was a young kid, around junior high or elementary school age. Many of the songs are scripture taken from the Bible set to verses in a song. I still remember the lyrics even though it's been more than ten years since then.
I especially remember "Guard The Trust", which, if I remember correctly, is made of Paul's advice to Timothy as a young Christian and how he should treat others and behave in a manner worthy of his calling. "Carry Me" is a wonderful song with a simple idea everyone can relate to on one of *those* days: "I am weak, You are strong." "Agony of Deceit" is a stern warning against false teachers. I think the type of false teachers we face today are a bit different from the ones back then, but the warning the Bible gives to watch out so that you are not deceived by arrogant people is still the same.
Steve Camp never seemed like an arrogant sort of person to me. His songs were directly from scripture and it felt like they were written by a person who was studying the Bible in-depth and set his musings on what the things he read meant to him in his everyday life. Many of the references might not make sense to someone who isn't familiar with the Bible or Bible stories, which is unfortunately typical of a lot of Christian music of this period. If you haven't read the Bible you might not understand the jumble of Bible quotes put together in "Consider the Cost" or references to things like the rich young ruler. I think this is an album made for someone who really knows a lot of Bible scripture and can follow the references and know what the speaker is talking about.
I think the most important track any Christian could hear on this album has got to be "Could I Be Called a Christian" which poses the question, could I really be called a Christian, if everyone knew the thoughts and attitudes of my heart? The idea expressed here struck a deep chord with me at that early age, and from then on I thought of being a Christian as something that starts deep within me, beginning with the way I think, not outside me, with what I do or don't do, or whether or not I go to church on Sunday.
This album will indeed sound pretty dated by now. However, it had a good message and I do think there needs to be some Christian music that is accessible to new believers and some that addresses issues that someone who's been a Christian for a long time would face. If you could compare Christian music to food, there has to be some milk, some salad, some potatoes, and some beef. This is more on the beefy side and may be hard for a young Christian or seeker to digest. However, the message is just right for someone who's been a Christian for a long time and studied the Bible in-depth.Consider the Cost Overview

Great Adventure ReviewSteven Curtis Chapman clearly had ambitions for The Great Adventure (1992), his fifth studio album since his solo debut First Hand was released five years earlier. His three previous projects, Real Life Conversations (1988), More to This Life (1989), and For the Sake of the Call (1990), each had several high-charting contemporary Christian music (CCM) singles. Furthermore, Chapman had been rewarded by his peers with multiple Dove Awards; both his peers and the public obviously liked what he was doing. But the pop/country artist didn't feel he had "arrived" yet, so he set his sights high for this project. His efforts were rewarded: the memorable singalong title track and his subsequent first concert tour with a band made him the most popular contemporary Christian artist around, a title that he would hold for about a decade.

The album begins well, with J.A.C. Redford's clearly western-inspired instrumental "Prologue." It's an enjoyable instrumental piece that nicely leads into the title track. Unfortunately, it's less successful as a setup for the entire album because the album falls short (a bit) in thematic unity. The title track itself is probably the song for which Chapman will most be remembered, with the possible exceptions of "I Will Be Here" and "Dive." Despite the somewhat tired analogy on which the song hinges, Chapman's lyricism here has progressed light years beyond that seen on his earliest albums. (Just compare the multitudes of clichés on Real Life Conversations with the lyrics on this album.)

The next three tracks successfully develop the album's main theme by defining what this adventure looks like. Chapman connects the Fall of humanity with Christ's redemption in a likeable pop shuffle called "Where We Belong." He then writes of human beings' need for each other after the Fall (think of Adam and Eve away from the Garden of Eden in a hostile world) through a personal, country-tinged power ballad of commitment to his wife, "Go There With You." The strings add a good deal to this impressive song. Finally, Chapman defines what paradise looks like today, outside of the Garden of Eden, in the irresistible, driving "That's Paradise." The answer: paradise is about salvation through Christ, loving God, and loving others.
The remaining six tracks are more practical; they illustrate the challenges involved in pursuing the "great adventure." The first three deal with discernment. "Don't Let the Fire Die" is an impassioned, moving plea from Chapman to a friend who is losing his heart for God. It's arguably the album's best song. "Got to B Tru" is a fun tune that uses the singer's inability to rap well as an illustration of how Christian witness must be real rather than forced. "Walk with the Wise" is a pretty ordinary contemporary Christian song -- nothing horrible, but nothing exceptionable, either. The title sums up the message.

Two tracks then focus on our relationships with others. "Maria," about a hurting soul, should be a moving ballad but mostly fails to connect with this listener. It does have a surprising Spanish musical tinge and an unusual vocal delivery from Chapman, but otherwise is unremarkable. Much better is "Still Called Today," a plea for human reconciliation that benefits from a nice guest vocal by BeBe Winans and a just-as-strong performance from Chapman. Surprisingly, an album that begins with a grand, sweeping statement comes to a climax with such an intimate song.
Finally, Chapman sums everything up with "Heart's Cry," a song of personal commitment to Christ. It's a quiet, effective denouement that demonstrates the resolve called for in "Don't Let the Fire Die."
Musically, The Great Adventure is mostly pop/country, with the accent as much on country as pop. Popwise, the album sounds like it most fits in the late 1980s, with some nods to the mid-80s and early 90s scattered throughout. It's not hard to start singing the lyrics to Don Henley's "Last Worthless Evening" or John Waite's "Missing You" over some of "Still Called Today's" chords -- and Chapman's lyrics to that song come across as his answer to Henley's "Heart of the Matter."
In retrospect, The Great Adventure probably had the success it did because of the optimism, fun, and joy that Chapman communicates in the title track, "That's Paradise," and "Got to B Tru" (all of which were singles). That sense of wonder had been glimpsed before occasionally (e.g., in More to This Life's "Treasure Island" and "Way Beyond the Blue") and would be featured prominently on Chapman's next studio album, Heaven in the Real World (1994).
The Great Adventure also clearly was not hurt by having the biggest production values of any of Chapman's first five albums. Furthermore, as on his previous two albums, Chapman continued to push himself in different directions vocally. These two features intertwine throughout the album to mostly commendable effect. Chapman aims for both a bigger sound and, in the album's early tracks, a bigger vocal delivery, and succeeds on both counts.
Still, despite its success, The Great Adventure neither addresses its subject matter as well as For the Sake of the Call covered its own material nor is as enjoyable from a pop perspective as More to This Life. The album is very strong up through "Don't Let the Fire Die," with those first five songs (I'm not counting Redford's "Prologue") arguably the best batch that Chapman had recorded up to that point in time. It's disappointing, then, to watch Chapman lose his momentum in the album's second half with a succession of middling-to-very-good, but never (with the exception of "Heart's Cry") great, songs. Chapman would start to realize his potential on Heaven in the Real World, but then really get a shot in the arm under producer Brown Bannister's oversight beginning with Signs of Life (1996). The Great Adventure was an important step in his career, but the best was yet to come. Three-and-a-half stars.Great Adventure Overview

Sweet Exchange ReviewHeather Payne, formerly known as the founder and voice behind Point of Grace has ventured out on her own for her first ever solo album "Sweet Exchange," available nationwide Sept. 14. "Sweet Exchange" features Heather's signature vocals paired with timeless hymns and anthems of the church while adding an updated style to create her signature sound. Featuring her first single "Rock of Ages," in addition to other classics "Holy Holy Holy" and the heartfelt anthem "My Jesus," Heather's soaring yet intimate voice take us on a journey of a "sweet exchange."
"Sweet Exchange" is a fresh take on the timeless hymns of the church. Modern arrangements, new choruses, and sometimes-complete re-imaginations help these deep and meaningful songs shine. So what makes a retired artist from one of the most successful groups in Christian music history decide to record a new album full of old hymns? A childhood memory helps explain: "I remember when I was very young, and my mom used to let me stand on the pew beside her in church. She let me hold the hymnal, even though I couldn't even read! I felt so big. I learned the hymns that way, just singing along. I want that for my kids now." It was the Shema from Deuteronomy 6, with the compelling call to impress the commands of the Lord on your children all day long, that struck Payne when she moved to Louisville in 2002. "I memorized that passage because we were starting to have kids and I wanted that in my mind and heart. As more kids were born, the Lord kept bringing it back up. Are you teaching them diligently? When you're traveling the way I was, there was no diligence or consistency or excellence."
With that context, I greatly enjoyed hearing one of my favorite female vocalists sing these amazing hymns. I feel that same calling as a father of 3 young daughters to teach them diligently the Word of God and to pass on to my girls the biblical truths woven throughout the classic hymns of the faith. Heather does an amazing job in making these songs sound fresh and contemporary. Some highlights for me are "O For A Thousand Tongues To Sing" which was also recently covered by David Crowder*Band, "Rock Of Ages" which was recently covered by Chris Rice, "Jesus Paid It All" and "Pass Me Not." In the past all of those songs have been recorded in a classic slow and reflective style, but not on this album. In fact, if you've liked David Crowder's upbeat musical recordings of hymns like his version of "Come Thou Fount," then this album is for you. Heather also infuses some extra lyrics in "Rock Of Ages" where she blends the biblical truth of "On Christ The Solid Rock I Stand" into her fresh and catchy chorus of "Rock Of Ages." If like me, you've always enjoyed Heather's vocals and you want to hear great recordings of hymns, get "Sweet Exchange" and you won't regret it.Sweet Exchange Overview

All For Love ReviewUsually when I buy a new music cd, there are a few songs I like immediately and others that must grow on me --but this cd is filled with songs that even taken individually, would be well worth the cost of the cd!
Make Way For the King is so worshipful and joyful --an awesome reminder for us to turn our hearts and minds to the Lord.
Walls Come Down is another one that catapults us right into His presence where we experience the power of praise and freedom from the power of darkness!
Holy is one of the most awesome songs I've ever heard --we just can't help but join the thousands of angels who encircle His throne and cry "Holy".
I could go on --but I'll condense this and just say this is one of the best Christian music cd's I've ever heard and I'm buying multiple copies for my family and friends. I highly recommend it!All For Love Overview

Letting Go ReviewI have been a fan of Jennifer Knapp for many, many years now and even to this day I can listen to every single song on every one of her CD's and gain something from it. I never tire of her music and it's gotten me through many hard times in my life. I've always appreciated her music for the simple fact that she's real- she's not pushing God down your throat or talking about how perfect she is- she addresses real life issues and pretty much lays it out that she's not perfect but willing to seek God and his forgiveness. I too wasn't sure what to expect from this album since her coming out, but from the moment I pushed play I haven't been able to turn it off or get the songs out of my head. As always, she delivers heartfelt emotions in her music that screams real, raw and uninhibited. I'm personally happy for Jennifer that she is able to free herself of the chains that have bound her for the last 7 years as she was in hiding. As a fellow Christian, I have nothing but love for her and pray that she is content and happy with the choices she makes- whether they are right or wrong is between her and God and that's the perception I have towards my other gay and lesbian friends. I will always have a place in my heart for Jennifer as being my favorite artist of all time for the sheer fact that her music touches my soul like no other artist has ever done. As for the other reviewers who feel like her music is a stark contrast to her previous stuff, well, you have to remember she's in a different place and these are the issues she's dealing with. Music is her outlet and that's exactely what she's doing with this album- letting go of her walls, frustrations and pain. Everybody deserves the process of healing and anger is one of those steps, so if she feels the need to voice her current feelings, then she certainly should. In addition, I don't feel like she's lashing out or turned bitter- she's just trying to make sense of this sometimes harsh and hypocritical world we live in and expressing it in her music.Letting Go Overview

Real Life ReviewI've been a big Lincoln Brewster fan since his first release on Vertical Records in 98'. Lincoln's songwriting skills are excellent and his solos electrifying. Real Life, however, is less diverse and has more of a 'cookie cutter' feel musically than Today is the Day. This is my honest reaction after listening to the entire cd 3 or 4 times. There are 3 or 4 songs that really moved me, but it just didn't seem as consistent as Today is the Day. I'd still buy it, but I found myself wanting a little more...Real Life Overview

My Utmost for His Highest ReviewAll the songs are great on this CD. A friend lent it to me to listen to one song and I ended up loving all of them and had to buy my own. It's a great album for personal praise and worship time.
I'd list my favorites but I'd end up listing all of them! I will talk briefly about some of the songs, though:
YOU ARE HOLY (4 Him) - What a great way to open the CD. The group sings beautifully on this song and the complex vocal arrangements really lift you up to a different level.
LOVER OF MY SOUL (Amy Grant) - My eyes always well up with tears when she sings the chorus. Just to know that Jesus is always with us!
MAN AFTER YOUR OWN HEART (Gary Chapman) - We are God's creation and must strive to please Him for He has supplied us with so much. A humbling song.
SOMETIMES HE COMES IN THE CLOUDS (Steven Curtis Chapman) - A heard this song at a memorial service and it reminds me of the Lord's second coming and even how He's still with us today.
MOVE IN ME (Michael W. Smith) - So what do you do when peopel tell you that God does not exist? This is Smitty's answer to those people. Very sweet simple song.
A HEART LIKE MINE (Bryan Duncan) - How much does God love us? A beautiful song sung by a man with powerful vocals!
SHINE ON US (Phillips, Craig & Dean) - What a great way to end the album. Asking for God to shed his light of truth and healing on us. Great vocal blends of harmony. Gorgeous!
By this album. I fell in love the very first moment I heard it. You will too.My Utmost for His Highest Overview

No Far Away ReviewI believe that nowadays music as a whole has gone way down hill. It has focused more on the scandals and fashion of it all rather than the talent and the music itself. When I first heard this album, I very rarely get a feeling that puts aspiration in me that music is still being made that is this pure and amazing.
Track three alone. Starry Night is easily one of the best songs to come out this past year. Its vocals are smooth, the guitars are magical and when the orchestra comes in, this song goes from amazing to EPIC. One word to describe this song is incendiary.
Track seven (Loving You Is Easy) is one catchy song that you will find yourself singing in the shower, singing in the car when it is silent, or singing on a nice stroll. The percussion on this song just got me dancing for no reason. Very appealing.
Track number four brought me to tears. Very few songs have ever brought me to that. It is a song that brings you through a journey through your past and up to present and all the good things and bad things that have happened. Simply monumental in music making.
In all, if you are are an avid music listener, it would be in your best interest to get this album. These musicians are ones to watch out and keep them in your stereos for many years to come.No Far Away Overview

Great Awakening ReviewThe Great Awakening by Leeland is the band's fourth full-length album. I first experienced Leeland with their stunning 2006 debut Sound Of Melodies, my top album of that year. Then, I saw them on tour with Casting Crowns where they blew me away when they performed "Reaching," "Carried To The Table," "Sound of Melodies" and the stirringly emotional "Tears of the Saints." At that show, I became a Leeland fan for life. Three albums and five years later, brothers Leeland and Jack Mooring are joined by 18-year old new band member Shelly Mooring, their younger sister, along with drummer Mike Smith for their best album since Sound Of Melodies.
Title track "The Great Awakening" kicks off the album in style with a hooky piano intro and infectious melody featuring Leeland's instantly recognizable vocals laying the foundation of the album. The song is based on an anonymous poem from the 1700's with these great lyrics, `One man wakes, awakens another, second one wakes his next door brother, three awake and arouse a town and turn the whole place upside down, many awake will cause such a fuss, it finally awakes the rest of us, one man awakes with dawn in his eyes, truly then it multiplies.' As missionary kids with hearts for the lost it is a quintessential Leeland song, and an incredible worship anthem. Anthemic is a great word to describe the entire project which oozes with Leeland's unique ability to capture the incredible emotion of their live performances in a seamless eleven song worship experience. "All Over The Earth" is almost nine minutes long and is a worship jam session. Recently retired worship band Delirious? has a worthy successor in this progressive worship band who blends U2 and Coldplay-style guitar riffs with worship choruses that could all be added to church services around the world, just like Hillsong UNITED.
The songs I'd love to sing with fellow believers are "Chains Hit The Ground," "Holy Ghost," "While We Sing" and "Unending Songs." They are all Scripturally based catchy songs addressing important Truths for people to lean on Jesus for hope no matter what their circumstances. The songs all come right out of personal prayer time for this gifted band and there are also some stirring ballads in the middle of the album including "I Wonder," "Pages," "Not Afraid Anymore" and "I Cry." You can really hear the siblings harmonize in "I Wonder" as they all worship with awe and wonder the greatness of the Cross. "I Cry" includes vulnerable and prayerful lyrics, "I cry are You out there tonight or am I all alone, this time is the fight of my life, I cry, I can't do this on my own, I can't do this on my own, I am giving You control." It is a gorgeous offering to our Savior and Redeemer Jesus. The song reminds us of the Truth of Romans 8:35--"Nothing can separate us from the love of Christ." Amen.
CLOSING THOUGHTS (Staff Review, NewReleaseTuesday.com)
This is the most spine-tingling worship project I've ever experienced and these eleven songs are all completely anointed, Spirit-led and emotionally captivating. The Great Awakening by Leeland is flawless and overflows with worship-driven emotional responses to our Lord and Savior. This is the top worship album of the year! Each of the previous three albums were GRAMMY nominated and I expect the same for this album, along with multiple GMA Dove Award nominations including worship album and group of the year.Great Awakening Overview

Home for Christmas ReviewAlthough this is certainly not what I was expecting, it is a treat.
As Barlowgirl is a band that normally rocks with the best of them, I was expecting rock and roll versions of these Christmas tunes. It is not that.
Rather, these are done in the classic style of holiday songs. Combined with the beautiful voices and superb harmonies of Barlowgirl and it becomes a real work of art. All of these songs are very good. There are no weak links. The Barlow sisters have demonstrated that they are very diverse along with being great rockers.
If you want a great Christmas CD, this would be a good one to get.Home for Christmas Overview

Be Lifted High ReviewBe Lifted High sets the stage for God to move through these original songs and moments of prophetic worship where you'll find your passion rises and hunger for the Lord is stirred. This album features Bethel Music artists: Brian and Jenn Johnson, Jeremy Riddle, William Matthews, Amanda Falk, and Steffany Frizzell. Jeremy Riddle is the writer and singer of the amazing worship song "Sweetly Broken," a Vineyard Worship song and one of the great songs on Jeremy's solo debut album on Varietal Records Full Attention, which was one of my top albums of 2007. He has an earnest, sincere songwriting and singing style that will immediately remind you of Bono from U2, Chris Martin from Coldplay, and also worship leader Matt Redman and Martin Smith from Delirious?. Since I love those artists and alternative rock style praise and worship, I'm predisposed to like Jeremy Riddle and Bethel Live.
Be Lifted High begins with a new worship classic "You Are Good," and the energy and enthusiasm of the crowd is infectious. I knew when I started singing and clapping along with the live recording that I was in for a real treat. The next hour and all 13 songs kept me hooked with the incredible vocals, stellar guitar playing and the amazing audience participation. This is what a live recording is all about. The vertical worship and number of songs I could imagine singing in union with fellow believers in a corporate worship setting is another highlight of this very solid album. Some of the songs that would be great additions to church services are "You Are Good," "One Thing Remains," "Furious," "Be Lifted High," "Hopes Anthem," "Love Came Down" and "Deep Cries Out." "One Thing Remains" is led by Brian Johnson with the amazing chorus "Your Love never fails, it never gives up, it never runs out on me." "Furious" is led by Jeremy Riddle and is one of my favorite songs of the year with the biblical truth: "His love is deep, His love is wide, And it covers us, His love is fierce, His love is strong, It is furious, His love is sweet, His love is wild, And its waking hearts to life." I love the bridge of "Hopes Anthem"-"He's bringing hope to the hopeless, giving His heart to the broken, sharing His home with the orphans, He is the hope of the nations, He is the song we're declaring, He is the joy, He is my joy!" The song is challenging and uplifting I can't get enough of it.
"Deep Cries Out" is one of the best "dance" worship songs I've ever heard. You can't help but move your body while belting out this incredible new anthem, which makes me think of David dancing before God in worship. "God I Look To You" has that classic Jesus Culture worship experience feel and will have you lifting your hands in worship to our King, as the bridge declares over and over "Hallelujah, Our God Reigns, Forever all my days, Hallelujah!" The album ends as great as it begins with closing tracks "God Of The Redeemed," which features Jeremy Riddle, along with "Forever and a Day," which has that Jesus Culture feel again and "One Thirst," which features the entire worship team. "One Thirst" will have you singing along with the Bethel Church congregation as they close with the chorus "Hallelujah come, yes Hallelujah come, we wait for You to come and show Your glory here today."
CLOSING THOUGHTS
If you like the song "Sweetly Broken," you'll love the album Be Lifted High. If you like Brit-Rock style praise and worship artists Hillsong UNITED, Matt Redman, Tim Hughes, Jesus Culture and Delirious?, then you can't go wrong with Jeremy Riddle and the Bethel Live worship team. Every song on this album has quickly become a staple in my playlist of my favorite worship anthems. Every song is worshipful and catchy. For sure, this will be among my top worship albums of the year. My best description of this incredible album is to remember the first time you attended a worship event that really made the hair stand up on your neck and if you want to re-live that experience, then you need to get Be Lifted High.Be Lifted High Overview

The Music of Christmas ReviewWhen I first got this CD in 1995, I was in love with it. It is a wonderful blend of contemporary and traditional sounds. But what seals the CD for me is the song "Going Home for Christmas". Instantly I knew I wanted to sing that song the first Christmas following my grandmother's death, and hoped it would be a long time before I got the opportunity. While it does not tell her story, it does sum up her spirit and faith in Jesus Christ. This year I will finally be singing that song. Funny, as I sit here writing the review, listening to the CD, it is playing "Emmanuel" a song of pure worship. Anyway my grandmother died this past August after battling a blood disease for 18 years. Tears would come to my eyes just listening to the song before her death, I can't imagine what it will be like when I try to sing it. This is the power of SCC's music, to evoke emotions and stir the passions toward the King, giving praise, worship and glory to God. This CD will not disapoint. The Music of Christmas Overview

Blessings ReviewThere's no denying some of the blessings in Laura Story's life. She wrote the No. 1 worship hit "Indescribable" recorded in 2004 by Chris Tomlin, married a handsome athlete named Martin Elvington the next year, and began working in music and women's ministry at the 4,000-member Perimeter Church in Atlanta. After signing an artist deal with the INO Records, her 2008 national debut Great God Who Saves won a Dove Award for Inspirational Album and earned Laura two consecutive nominations for Female Vocalist of the Year--all blessings, indeed. But amidst that success a brain tumor hospitalized her husband in 2006. The faith Story sang about was put through the unexpected fires of fear and loneliness; most young newlyweds don't imagine being kept alive at one point by breathing machines or having to find their way through significant post-operative vision and memory loss. Could grace notes resound from such a life-altering struggle? Laura's incisive new album, Blessings, suggests they do.

Laura has quickly become one of my all-time favorite singer-songwriters. Her songs are all catchy, uplifting and filled with biblical truth. Opening songs "This Is The Day" and "Friend Of Sinners" perfectly display all of those traits. From the truth of "this is the day of our salvation," to "friend of sinners, our Deliverer, Jesus Savior of the world, sent from Heaven, King of Glory, You're the Servant of us all," every single lyric of every song is dedicated as an offering to our King and Savior Jesus. This is the perfect album to focus your heart and mind on Jesus as we prepare for Easter. Musically, the orchestral, piano, and guitar arrangements are all catchy and uplifting and church worship leaders could literally add every song to their set lists. "You Are Love" and "What A Savior" are amazing congregational songs, with very sing-able vertical lyrics. In "You Are Love," Laura passionately sings, "Everlasting, Never-ending, All Consuming, You Are Love, Oh God of the Heavens, You have ascended from Your throne...by this all men will know." In "What A Savior," my favorite part of the song is the bridge, "You are the way the truth and the life, You are my joy and salvation, Stood in my place taking my shame." Those words are a great reminder that we don't have to stand in shame anymore before the Lord. The sins that we have committed in the past, present and future have all been taken away by Jesus. Jesus bore all of that shame on the cross and gives us cause to celebrate "Hallelujah, what a Savior!"
The stand-out song of the album and surefire GMA Dove Award nominee for song of the year is Blessings' breathtaking title track and first single which has already topped the Christian charts. "Blessings" has some of the best lyrics I've ever heard in any song. I can't get enough of Laura's transparency and confessional challenges to all of us as believers in this incredible song. I am wrecked by the lyrics, "What if my greatest disappointments, Or the aching of this life, Is the revealing of a greater thirst this world can't satisfy." Something Laura and I discussed was that as believers we need to remember that this world is not our home. We have a much bigger agenda, and the security of everlasting life as promised by our Savior Jesus. As this song so beautifully depicts, we weren't made for this world.

The album is chock full of potential radio singles and every song is completely captivating. "Your Name Will Be Praised" has yet another worshipful bridge, "For Who You are, for what You've done, for what You've yet to do...All glory to You!" Ballads are certainly one of Laura's strengths as after dabbing my eyes and getting goose bumps constantly during "Blessings," two other stand-out songs are featured in the second half of the album, "One Life To Lose" and "Prodigal Song." "One Life To Lose" is another probable hit song with Laura's gorgeous and passionate proclamation, "For there's One Lord Who leads, I have learned when I am lost, it's there that I am found." "Prodigal Song" keeps the tears flowing as Laura sings a story-song about "Henry" where Laura sings "his father waits, and He is watching, and He is hoping, His eyes are weary, His arms are open, His prayer, so softly spoken, please come home...to your seat at the table, to your Father who weeps." The song even has a "Cats In The Cradle" moment where Henry changes from the prodigal son to the father. Laura's brilliant songwriting and engaging singing voice makes this one of those albums that you can literally listen to daily for encouragement and times of prayer and reflection. Closing songs "Remember" and "Faithful God" are both great worship songs for the Church similar to "Bless The Lord" and "Perfect Peace" from Great God Who Saves.

CLOSING THOUGHTS
With Great God Who Saves winning a GMA Dove Award for Inspirational Album and earning Laura two consecutive nominations for Female Vocalist of the Year, Blessings completely solidifies Laura as the premier singer-songwriter in the Inspirational genre. I fully expect Laura and her stellar album to be nominated for multiple awards including album, female vocalist, artist and song of the year. Don't miss out on one of the best albums of the year!Blessings Overview

I Have a Song ReviewOn "Jehovah Shalom" Shannon Wexelberg sings, "In the darkness Your presence wraps around me / Like a blanket of rest that covers me." It's a comforting thought, one of many on I Have a Song. The Biblical worldview, winsome melodies and inspirational pop provide powerful consolation.
It springs from a season of suffering. When Wexelberg began writing in the spring of 2009 (aside from a few hymns she writes all the songs), her husband had just started to recover from a terrible motorcycle accident in which he broke 23 bones and endured three major surgeries. As she applied the finishing touches in early 2010, a devastating earthquake struck Haiti on January 12th. As she pondered these events, she could not escape a bigger reality; God is faithful and full of love. Even in tragedy there is hope. There is music. There is song.
The title track epitomizes this release. The music is basic and highly accessible, tending toward adult contemporary and inspirational. The words have depth and restrained production makes them stand out. Wexelberg is blessed with a voice capable of a gentle caress or belting-out an anthem. The song ends with a stanza from "His Eye is on the Sparrow."
The CD includes a few hymn interludes and a complete version of "'Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus." As pleasant as these are, she shines brightest on her own material. The songwriting is excellent. "Becoming" is a stripped-down, keyboard affair that conveys a longing to be like Christ in every way. You can feel the tenderness and intimacy.
Songs with faster tempos have a fuller sound and a hint of edginess. "Boundless" rocks! It's the kind of song that makes you want to stand and pump your fist in the air. It's a victorious declaration of the lack of limits to God's love.
Wexelberg varies the styles and hits the mark each time. Typical of the publisher, this strikes a cautious but wholesome balance between ministry and relevance. Discovery House Publishers is known for products that feed the soul, and this is no exception. It's a triumph for publisher and artist.
